What I like best about this book is that the author gives ...

What I like best about this book is that the author gives the reader a practical step-by-step process to follow for solving math problems. There are many good problem solving books, but most of them focus on specific problems and tactics. This book focuses more on the "process" of how to solve a hard math problem. (Part II of the book gives a number of examples.) A good process is just as important as good strategy and tactics. I noticed in my math classes that most students can solve problems that they have seen before. However, students often feel lost when they are given a math problem that doesn't look like any of the homework problems. I've been experimenting with the author's process, and it does seem to work for many of my students, or at least for the brighter ones. It helps them get past their mental barriers and provides them with a road map to solve unfamiliar math problems. I also enjoyed the author's honesty and sense of humor. He explains how mathematicians solve problems in real practice using methods that really work. I like his idea that "ugly solutions precede beautiful solutions." First you find an ugly solution. Then you "polish the stone" and make it beautiful. It's more of a humanistic view that mathematics is done by real people who are fallible, yet creative. My only criticism is that the problems in Part II of the book are too difficult for the average student. Many students are not well prepared for such problems. Then again, maybe that's the point. The author apparently wants to show how people of average intelligence can solve hard math problems. I've been teaching mathematics for over 20 years, and even I learned a few things from this book.

Excellent reading for teaching about the problem solving process

Full Disclosure -- I may be biased because the author is my friend!

I read one of the initial drafts of this book, and I found it to be very helpful for anyone who wants to learn how to solve complex math problems. In fact, the process could be applied to many other life endeavors.

About the Author
Linda A. Hill is the Wallace Brett Donham Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School and faculty chair of the Leadership Initiative. Willing, Able, and Well Done

Most leaders know that innovation is the key to success, even survival, in a competitive global environment, but we don’t know how to do innovation! This book answers the “how to” question. The book offers not only an innovation formula but also explicit case studies of innovation in practice. Rather than create innovative vision themselves, innovative leaders create an ecosystem that allows the collective innovative vision to emerge from hard work. Leaders “set the stage” but aren’t actors on that stage. They create a “willing” team by forging a common purpose, shared values, and mutual rules. Leaders develop their teams by using techniques to implement the innovation process: Collaboration (uses the collaborative abrasion technique), discovery-driven learning (uses the creative agility technique), and integrative decision making (uses the creative resolution technique). Everyone has a slice of genius. Great leaders figure out how to find that genius and get it to play well with others. While well written and engaging, would have liked to see more structure and clarity up front around the three aspects of being willing and three of being able, which got a bit clouded at times. Otherwise, this is a fine piece research and writing for any leader and have recommended to my executive clients.

Linda Hill and her associates have assembled a series of explorations into how Pixar, Google, EBay and others have implemented successful innovations. From those observations they have consturcted a model of innovation that puts heavy emphasis on the leaders' role--not to do it but to create an environment that fosters it. What those leaders have to do is pretty much stay out of the way having once created a set of goals and values that informs the work of those pursuing innovation.

I was overjoyed to see that the book lived up to my ...

I have been looking for Kepler's Astronomia Nova for a couple of years, but was unable to find them in English (Donahue's first edition being exceedingly expensive). I tried to dive into Astronomia Nova as much as I could by reading Donahue's Selections, Stephenson's Kepler's Physical Astronomy and scans of the original 1609 edition available online (even though I don't read Latin!). So, it was with enormous anticipation that I opened the huge package from Amazon yesterday. I was overjoyed to see that the book lived up to my expectations! It is very faithful to the 1609 edition, stating with the size! It also features all of Kepler's margin annotations in place, large and readable diagrams that are repeated several times so that the reader doesn't have to flip pages when following an explanation, as in the original, and the original diagrams which have meaningful decorations are reproduced as well. So I feel that I can finally access the 1609 edition! Donahue has also added a nice introduction, exploring some historical context and giving a good primer that will help the reader understand Kepler's work.

In short, an amazing book!

About the Author
Sir Terence Rattigan was one of the most popular English 20th-century dramatists. Reading the play was okay

I'm glad I got the original version of this drama on paper to read. I don't know how much it helped me understand the play or rather the two movie versions. But "The Winslow Boy" in either version on film is really a great play. A courtroom drama without ever going into the courtroom ... also a wonderful insight into an historical event at a different level. My favorite is the Mamet film, BTW.

I liked the play itself, but I especially liked three editorial contributions: 1) a description of the real-life events from which the play derives, 2) a history of the various productions and adaptations of the play, and 3) a discussion of Rattigan's place in English drama.

John W. Santrock received his Ph.D. from the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota. He taught at the University of Charleston and the University of Georgia before joining the faculty at the University of Texas at Dallas. He has worked as a school psychologist and currently teaches educational psychology every year at the undergraduate level. In 2006, John received the University of Texas at Dallas Excellence in teaching award. superfluous new edition to justify inflated price

Another edition of this? Good lord. The publisher is just pumping out new editions of this in order to justify an inflated price. The kicker is that colleges and professors just go along with. There is NO REASON WHATSOEVER to buy this instead of a far cheaper previous edition. Don't contribute to this problem.

A tale of anxiety, loneliness, repression and stunted emotional growth. The friendly stranger of this story is a time bomb, for himself and for children he will meet in future. Heartbreaking for all. Recommended to those who know a pedophile and want to understand.

I started this novel with the idea I would receive some insight into the mind of a sexual pervert. The book was a rambling story about nothing more than the uninteresting life of a very confused young man. I do not recommend you read it. By the way, I first became aware of this book in Readers Digest. It sounded interesting. It was not.

No character development. No plot. No conflict resolution. Chronological diary with repetitive entries. Main character had many neuroses totally unrelated to his main problem of pedophilia, such as phobias and social anxiety and thinking based on fantasy.

McCaffrey again explores the effects of institutionalized memory loss on a culture in the third volume of a series that began with Crystal Singer . Killashandra Ree, one of the rare individuals with perfect pitch who can find and cut the Ballybran crystals on which much of the galaxy's economy is based, turns away from her lover and partner Lars Dahl when he becomes head of the Heptite Guild and, to her discomfort, moves to bring some order into the workings of the organization that controls the crystal trade. In order to work with crystal one must adapt to a symbiotic organism that heals humans rapidly and prolongs life; as a side effect, those who handle crystal lose their memories, forgetting the locations of good mining sites as well as the identities of their friends and lovers. While Lars undertakes various projects to overcome this disability, Killashandra has an off-planet fling. Eventually she reconciles herself to change, finding possible salvation for them all. As lacking in coherence as a crystal singer's life and bereft of interesting characters, this episodic McCaffrey effort is a major disappointment.

In Sci-Fi, there is intelligent life over 40

I read McCaffrey when I want to be comforted by the presence of basically decent people. The plots don't matter to me much and the attempts at true sci-fi technology are something to skipped over as quickly as possible (eg. the workings of a Hive ship.) For that reason, I have also enjoyed McCaffrey's non-Sci-fi books, in particular "A Stitch in Snow".
The Crystal Singer series is my favorite sci-fi trilogy and Crystal Line is my favorite of the three books. In Crystal Singer, we have the usual angry and mis-treated teenager who strikes out on her own and is attracted to the domineering macho types. In Killashandra, we have a woman who has matured enough to change her taste in men. But in Crystal Line we have one of the very few "middle-aged" (I know she's actually several hundred years old according to the plot) heroines in sci-fi. Her decisions about what she will do with her life, and who she will do it with, are long over. But she still has decisions to make about how she will deal with both the choices that she has made and the things that life has done to her.
