Practical, helpful advice with a more edgy tone. Love it!

This book is called the Urban Monk. The author is going to be a little edgier and use that "S" word. This is not a book written for young adults or children, so the use of profanity and edgy talk is fine in this context. If this is something that will bother you, please consider this before purchasing. This book has a load of practical good advice for those looking to live a more focused, less stressful, purposeful, peaceful life while still living in a modern urban world of city traffic and carpools, deadlines, over-filled calendars, and the feeling of being pulled in every direction just making you feel like you're losing control of your life. This is not your typical touchy-feely book found in this genre. Dr. Shojai provides practical tips such as meditation, figuring out what your priorities are, Qi Gong exercises, etc, to help you reset your life and get back in control. When I read this book, I felt like Dr. Shojai knew exactly what kind of time and scheduling restraints I'm dealing with, which made me want to try his advice. So far, I have to say it's worked wonders!

Not for folks who are easily offended and live in denial

This book is like Navy Seal training for everyday life. If you are looking for another "warm and fuzzy" hand holding self help book, you might want to skip this one. Pedram is blunt and obviously knows his stuff. Some argue that the information in this book is nothing new, I disagree, but even so it is sometimes the delivery method that hits home. I challenge you to not find anything in this book that you can not relate to, especially if there are things in your life that don't seem to be working. Get with the program, get off your ass, read the book, do the work...watch your life change, for the better.

Better than hiding in a monastery!

After seeing a presentation Pedram Shojai gave at a conference, I had to look further into his work. His book did not disappoint! Dr. Shojai gives practical suggestions for finding and enhancing your inner vitality here and now in the real world, rather than having to travel to the far east and live as a monk for a few years (as he did). I truly appreciate that he advocates using your energy and vitality to make the world a better place.

Dr. Shojai has online resources to augment the material in the book, too. I have found the guides, recipes, and videos very helpful in finding my "inner zen." I feel like I am truly on my way to becoming an Urban Monk, too, and I don't have to quit my day job to do it!

Interesting, Balanced Account of a Hostage Negotiator's Career

Crisis Negotiation is a fairly new tool for law enforcement, and this book is a fascinating read. Gary Noesner was instrumental in the development of the most effective tools to use when crises arise.

What is most interesting is that Mr. Noesner does not pull his punches, yet at the same time remains respectful toward his former employer (the FBI) as well as the people he has worked with over the years. The author's descriptions ring true and fit with other details the reader can find through research, while at the same time filling in the blanks concerning much of what was happening behind the scenes. Mr. Noesner is a firm believer of hostage negotiations (and that negotiators should work closely with tactical agents), and that belief can be felt throughout the book.

I also enjoyed the quotes prefacing each chapter. It is a side benefit that some of the the techniques employed by hostage negotiators can be used by anyone to enhance their relationships in the workplace as well as in one's personal life (this is not a point made by the author, just a personal reflection).

"Stalling for Time" is an easy read, told in a story form that places the reader within the action. Many of the highlights of Mr. Noesner's career are some of the biggest news stories, such as Waco and the Freemen siege in Montana. For readers aware of these incidents this book will add to your knowledge, as well as educate those first hearing about these historical events.

We are all safer because of him.

Few people in life know what they want to do from an early age. The author was one of those people and pursued his dream of joining the FBI. He had an illustrious career and helped implement changes that make our lives safer today.

Mr. Noesner tells about some of the incidents that happened during this career explaining where things went wrong, or how they were controlled from becoming destructive, and were then settled peacefully. This was a good book which was also very technical at times. However I read it in one day because it captured and held my interest.

A sweet Hannukah story

Melly's Menorah is a sweet book about a little girl (in animal charachter) trying to help out during family preparations for Hannukah. It shows the busy family, each one contributing to the special celebration. No-one seems to need little Melly's help but at the end she saves the celebration. The stickers add to the fun. A cute book for 3-4 year olds, I bought a bunch to give away as party favors for our young relatives and friends at Hannukah.

Chanukkah treasure

I was recommended to this book when i was looking for something to read to my grand dughters' pre school class. This is an excellent story for the under fives. It is also excellent for audiences that are not jewish as an introduction to the holiday that is light hearted and not too "Religious".

About the Author
Marion Cunningham was born in southern California. She was responsible for the complete revision of The Fannie Farmer Cookbook and is the author of The Fannie Farmer Baking Book, The Breakfast Book, The Supper Book, Cooking with Children, and Learning to Cook with Marion Cunningham. She frequently traveled throughout the country giving cooking demonstrations, and contributed articles to Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, Saveur, and Gourmet magazines, as well as writing a column for the San Francisco Chronicle. In May 2003 she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the James Beard Foundation. Cunningham died in 2012.

Such Wonderful Breakfast Ideas! Staple Breakfast Cookbook... Great Gift!

So many wonderful breakfast ideas inside! They are simple to make, most of them. Straightforward instructions and the print of the book is very clear and larger sized (good for reading, even for older folks). Truly a staple for any breakfast lover. I have had this book a long time and just purchased a new copy recently. So many wonderful ideas! A lot of the recipes are traditional things that you might have for breakfast in England (many different types of egg preparations), not just recipes but ways of preparing more traditional items like eggs and griddling etc... well beyond the basic poached/fried/scrambled eggs or the basic pancakes/waffles we are all familiar with.

Lemon Pancakes

I had these to die for lemon pancakes at a restaurant in San Francisco. I came home and consulted my copy of The Breakfast Book (purchased in 2001 from Amazon) and sure enough they were there. Soooo, yummy.

This fancy farm to table restaurant has a 3 hour wait for a table during the week and they charge $15 for a single order of lemon pancakes. So do yourself a favor and buy this cookbook for $18 instead. Like the other reviewers, my copy is stained and falling apart. Every recipe that I have tried is really, really tasty. I may have to buy a new copy soon.

Must. Have.

This cookbook is a must have. I had another copy of this book for years - but in a separation, my partner took the copy. I had to replace it! There are a few recipes in here that, although I've made them often enough to know them by heart, I like the security of having the origin handy. Plus, there are gems in there that I've only made a few times but will make again - just not often enough to memorize. But I love this cookbook.

A practical and insightful guide to writing better JavaScript

Having consumed the standard fare of Javascript: The Good Parts and a few other of the “classics", I've always felt there was a need for a well written Best Practices book. Reliable JavaScript does a great job of fulfilling that. Building modifiable and extensible code is hard. I think this book offers a few things that will help you avoid technical debt and crippling complexity (something I've found my JS code to suffer from more easily than other languages).

- Part I incorporates several base principles (TDD, SOLID) to offer a holistic view on how to build reliable JavaScript. They take an interesting approach by walking through the construction of modules using TDD to discuss why it's useful, how it works and how to avoid pitfalls.
- Part II is dedicated to the discussion of proper implementation of select patterns in JS. For each pattern, I was happy to see a section on how to unit test (with many of the introductions written as “Understanding the Pattern Through Unit Tests”), representing the commitment this book takes to TDD.
- Part III was of particular interest to me, someone who was a believed in SOLID principles but had a tough time applying them in JavaScript due to lack of interfaces (aka contracts). I was delighted to see a simple idea for how to get the benefits of code contract style development through testing. I'm actually considering applying this technique to some Python code, to boot. Additionally, they provide a mixin pattern which has a bit more intelligence to avoid clobbering existing properties.
- Part IV and V cover miscellaneous topics and then a well written summary that will be useful when I go back to this book to remind myself what the book said about x, without needing to re-read entire chapters.

I recommend this book if you've already read something like JavaScript: The Good Parts but are hoping to learn more about robust code through patterns, best practices and TDD. It’s not a TDD book per se, but its use throughout the book makes for some useful demonstrations. I don't see the material as too opinionated, as it applies to JS in general, not just a single framework, and you can pick and choose what to implement. It can get pretty deep at certain points, but the organization of the book makes it easy to jump around based on your familiarity and interest in each topic.

Overall, a practical and insightful guide to writing better JavaScript.

David Rudel has put together the definite word on the Zukertort Colle. This is a refreshing writing style with new ideas which should be helpful for the master to beginner player. What I liked about the book was the complete master game examples David used to show his ideas. I decided to play the Colle-Zukertort system as White and have been playing it almost exclusively ever since. This opening system has enabled me to play quite a few exciting kingside attacks. But of course, any chess opening is far from simple and your opponents usually have plenty opportunities to steer the game in other directions. And with good chances to storm the black castle, quite a few of my opponents stubbornly refused to play into my favorite Zukertort main line, choosing "anti" Colle setups instead. Unfortunately, the Colle-Zukertort is rarely played at the grandmaster-level and thus receives little attention, frequently leaving the fans of this system on their own to find good moves. But this has changed now. With Zuke 'Em-The Colle Zukertort Revolutionized, David Rudel published a nice book on this opening system. David Rudel is proposing several highly interesting alternatives for White in these cases. While GMs certainly have superior analysis skills, they do not necessarily explain their thoughts on a level accessible to amateurs. I played through several of the annotated games in this book and read most of the analysis. While reading, I often asked myself questions like "why can't I play Ne5 right now?" Quite often, David Rudel literally asks this questions himself in the book and provides an explanation. A fantastic GM-caliber opening resource made accessbile to complete beginners

b3-Colle was the opening system of choice for the unofficial world champion Akiba Rubinstein. The opening is easy to reproduce over the board - just play d4, e3, Bd3, Nf3, Nbd2, b3, Bb2, 0-0, a3, Ne5 ... that is 10 moves - against any setup by black. A simple 10-move sequence that is good enough for world championship is rare! Needless to say, Black has many good responses, and White needs to have a World Champion's understanding of all resulting positions to play the middlegame.

Enter Zuke 'Em. David Rudel breaks down the b3-Colle opening into 68 easily digestible variations over a hundred pages and then proceeds to explain the ideas behind them, so that memorization is minimized. This forms only half the book. In the remaining half, he shows you when NOT to play the b3-Colle but transpose into some other opening, HOW to do so and HOW to follow-through.

Ultimately, he includes a training section in the book to aid you in recalling tactics, strategies, critical moments in opening and move orders.

Note to beginners: A lot of beginners are generally afraid of playing 1 d4. However, with Zuke 'Em, a beginner can get through the opening without losing a pawn, and emerge into a fairly understandable middle game position, where a lot of tactics lurk. Classical Bishop Sacrifice, two bishops sacrfice, Attacking with two knights and a Queen, Attacking with only major pieces - all these theme occur regularly in b3-Colle middlegame - very frequently. David Rudel uses a conversational tone in the book and explains the ideas so that even a kid can understand the material. This should be your FIRST OPENING BOOK!

Note: The book adds a lot to a Killer chess opening repertoire by Aaron Summerscale, but, refers you to it for 150 attack and Barry attack and Dutch Stonewall. So, for a complete repertoire, you will need to buy Summerscale's book.

Experience: I read chapters 1-5, part of 11 and part of 12 in one sitting. These cover the main b3-colle lines. The books is unputtable - so, you need to have a CHESS BOARD nearby and gallons of coffee before you start reading it for the first time.

Aftermath: I have now had the book for over a month. I have reread the chapters 4 and 5 (the main chapters on b3-Colle) at least 5 times over. I look up other lines as and when they arise in my games. There were certain anti-Colle lines givein Summerscale's book that I was uncomfortable playing, but Zuke 'Em addressed ALL of them. Now, I am confident that I will always have a complete repertoire preparation at hand.

Learn it quickly and grow into the complexities

Visual learners will greatly appreciate the practical design of Rudel's book, the snapshots of positions and visual demonstration of the opening, the lines, and his analysis. In-a-nutshell concepts that are easy to learn followed by deep analysis allow a beginner to pick up this opening in a short time and then "grow into" the situational complexities that Rudel deftly addresses.

I bought this book because I decided to "get serious" and learn an opening system that I could consistently use and apply without hundreds of hours of study. Here is what I found:

1. The author provides a learnable 10-move opening that's viable against virtually every black opening sequence and is learnable in a day or two
2. After understanding the key opening concepts that go along with the opening, which Rudel explains in plain english and an easy-to-digest-and-recall way, he explains the purpose and "plan" for each piece - which was incredibly helpful to formulating responses during the game
3. In a short time I had a straight-forward "if-then" thought process for choosing responsive moves ESPECIALLY when I did not know the name, let alone the concept behind, black's defensive maneuvers
4. I find myself going back and re-reading sections after I have put them to use

The book and Rudel's explanations go much deeper. Once past the first opening chapters, the depth of analysis and rebuttal Rudel applied to scenarios white may encounter when playing the Colle-Zukertort is amazingly helpful. This is not a book that just gives you the first 10 moves and says "good luck," it is a book that delves deep into what you should be doing and aiming for with your pieces in the continuing lines.

What I personally find extraordinarily helpful is an entire chapter or index of "snapshots" of opening positions in the Colle-Zukertort that allow you to look at the position on your own board, compare it to the book, and then quickly flip to the appropriate chapter and section of analysis of that position.

Those of you who learn by doing--or are buying the book for a friend or loved one who is "hands on" in the way they learn--will get so much out of this book because of Rudel's style of writing and presentation.

A Club-Player's Guide to the Zukertort

If you are a club-level chess player who likes d-pawn openings, then this is a book well worth perusing. If you play the Zukertort opening, then it is simply a must read. A club-level player himself, author David Rudel knows his target audience and how they think, and has written a book that speaks to them with clarity and understanding.

Although the frontiers of top-level chess knowledge are driven by concrete analysis these days--much of it computer generated--down at the club level it is still true that understanding the ideas behind a opening is more efficient than memorizing variations. In this book, Rudel has laid out the variations of the Zukertort opening in a way that strives to convey the ideas as clearly as possible, so that the Zukertort player will know how to adjust to meet Black's counterplans.

A very strong player would probably criticize this book for being too short on concrete analysis and too long on generalizations. There is no doubt some truth to this. However, the large amounts of concrete analysis that populate the typical openings book aren't absorbed and retained by the typical club-level player anyway, and often merely obscure the forest for the trees. As for generalizations, these--while fallible--have the important psychological effect of giving the player who has learned them a confidence that he knows what's going on in a given position. This is the great virtue of Rudel's book: it leaves you feeling that all the bases of practical importance have been covered, and that you have received enough training so that you can usually reach positions where you know more about what's going on than your opponent does.
