Buyer beware -- this book has been released in the US as Haunt Me Still. Readers familiar with the wide variety of superstitions and stories associated with Maccers/The Scottish Play/The Cursed Play/etc. should enjoy the manner in which those superstitions time travel in this mystery. A solid follow up to Interred With Their Bones.

Iconoclastic, tense but unachieved

No surprise of course in the field of Shakespearean folklore: the curse of Macbeth. Nothing new under the moon and some good old witchcraft under the sun or in the night.

The novel is well built and associates in the most wicked way white witchcraft, the good one, black witchcraft, the evil one, jealousy and revenge among actors of the 19th century as well as the 20th and even the 21st centuries. Macbeth is a perfect occasion for all those to come together and try to re-enact a "missing" version of Macbeth that probably never existed.

That enables the author to bring back up the famous Dr Dee and his camarilla of nice witchcraft but the author did not push the pawn far enough. Witchcraft was a major crime under Henry VIII, and Anne Boleyn was accused of such practices in order for Henry VIII to get rid of her and get her beheaded which was an honor and privilege when the normal punishment should have been burnt at the stake after various ordeals. One person at the time did not forget about it. That was Elizabeth I, her very daughter, and one of her decisions was to decriminalize witchcraft though she maintained stealing or getting unwanted advantages with such practices, provided it was proved not only rumored, a minor crime assimilated to lying and stealing, which it was. James I, the Scottish Stuart, as soon as he ascended the throne re-established witchcraft as a major crime punished by death. Why the author did not mention those facts is beyond me. Witchcraft was a political battle not only in the back corridors of the palaces at the time and England will have to wait for the Glorious Revolution for witchcraft to be finally decriminalized.

The novel is well built as for suspense and twisted developments and it does not take an over-gullible reader to believe the twists in the fabric, nor to see the potential swerves and U-turns the plot may take. Some are quite falling on us by surprise. If you like haunted castles and fiery bleak but dense and dark rituals, you will enjoy every page of this book.

I think though some passages are slightly too slow or at least slower than others and some twists are pre-fabricated. But that is an impression I got four or five times, only. I doubt very much you could get in and get out of the British Museum that easily, especially while stealing a couple of artifacts and killing a couple of people, one in an Aztec ritual.

But there is another thing that bothers me. All the art of Shakespeare is based on numerical keys and particularly three and four; Three and the triple goddess is present several times and not as a symbol of witchcraft or whatever. The moon, one side of the triple goddess, Selene, is the thing Juliet does not want to swear by because it is inconstant and triple of course: waxing, full and waning. Each play seems to have its number. Richard III works on nine, the diabolical number. No surprise. As you like it or A Midsummer Night's Dream works on four with the ultimate four weddings or reunions at the end of these plays, hence eight and the second coming. Three is disruptive and the novel here does not insist enough on that triple goddess.

Actually it works slightly sideways and instead of quoting the triple Goddess Hecate-Selene-Diana it heavily insists on Medea who was supposedly dedicated to the triple goddess in its Hecate (quoted once in the novel but not in connection with Medea) identity. If she had been able to work along that wider line, the author would have understood and used the battle of women for recognition under Elizabeth, completely rejected under the Stuarts, absolutely victimized under the Puritans and finally liberated under Queen Mary II and Queen Anne. The novel definitely misses that historical stake (and not that of witch burning) of Shakespeare's time always present in all his plays even when the woman is the wicked one like Lady Macbeth.

The female characters of that novel are essential but they are altogether definitely of second order and Kate will close the novel on a half expected but unfulfilled reunion with Ben who walks away unreached. A perfect and final image of female frustration. Shakespeare deserves better.

Good plot but with little character development

This book has a convoluted plot. Although set in the present the style of writing is more 1930s and although the plot is explored at great length (almost 500 pages) it is slow paced.
Without some knowledge of the plot of Macbeth and the associated superstitions surrounding the play this book is not an easy read. My main criticism is that there is little character development and although the plot has great potential without being able to relate to the characters I found it a dull read.

Judy Moody Gets Famous

I recently bought the Judy Moody books for my 8 year old son. I read them too and found them to be enjoyable.
In this one Judy just wants to be famous SO bad especially after her younger brother Stink, gets to go to the White House and one of her classroom rivals wins a spelling bee. She, along with her closest friends, try hard to become "famous". Her first attempt of trying to make people believe that she actually has a cherry pit that belonged to George Washington end hilariously. Later she sees a chance to win a contest at the local pet store but at the last minute that one goes awry.
Judy does finally achieve "stardom" and it is very heartwarming.
You will enjoy these books as well as your children. My 8 year old son just loves them and can't wait for the next one. If your child enjoys the Junie B books, they will probably like these as well.

An Educator's View

This series is a good reading level for third or fourth graders to take on independently. Younger children will enjoy having these stories read to them.
I like many things about this book. The story line is funny and engaging. There are many examples of onomatopoeia. Additionally, the book introduces interesting and educational facts. Judy is a character that many young girls will be able to relate to. Children with younger siblings will easily relate to and enjoy the interactions between Judy and her little brother, Stink.

Here is what I do not like: Judy does an awful lot of lying in this book and never faces any consequences. I believe this sends a terrible message to our children.

No other word but funny...

The sequel to Judy Moody can get no other word than being funny! After she fails to win the spelling bee contest and sees her arch rival Jessica win and get that beautiful tiara Judy Moody made it her job to become famous!! However like all other Judy Moody books things get out of hand and the book turns outragously funny. Judy's cat named "Mouse" helps achieve some fame but that isn't lasting. A hilirious book for all ages to enjoy and laugh about!!

Drama is not a Spiritual Gift

I loved the first five pages, but the rest of this book is more like Carol Brown was trying to talk her problem out loud and hoping she came up with a solution. In the end there are no real heavenly solutions in this book. The title should have been "don't get emotionally involved with other people's drama". I agree that if you dump yourself in other people's drama then it will ruin you and your day but that is not a Spiritual Gift. I think the sad part is that Carol Brown's main idea never takes hold. It seems as if she was chasing someone else's idea and putting round pegs in square holes to try and make it work. I haven't read any of her other books so I'm just basing this review on this book. She is a great writer but the main idea falls flat and only one or two of the personal stories have any heart in them. I'd pass on this book because it appears most of the stars on these reviews are riding off her past reputation.

Ever feel like an emotional sponge? When you hang out with someone who is stressed do you ever "soak" up their drama? Or have you ever met someone and get a "vibe" that they have issues going on - their exterior looks happy but you just get a feeling that they're really upset on the inside?

If that type of scenario sounds familiar you'll want to read this book!

All my life I've had a "sense" about people. I've been able to pick up "vibes." I always thought it was weird and just tried to ignore it. After reading this book I realize being highly sensitive is common. After reading this book I realize it's not weird; it's just the way I'm wired! Finally - I understand now what's going on and not only how to cope but how to thrive.

I liked the way the author took spiritual concepts and made them easy to understand. I appreciated the combination of spiritual and scientific data. The book was an easy read. You'll want to read it once for yourself and if you are at all like me you'll reread it for someone you know that is a highly sensitive person.

I feel like now I have a better understanding not only of myself, but also of some of my family members, a coworker, a client, and a few of my friends.

Fabulous writing, and memorable stories...

There are several stories, and I enjoyed them all. I had heard The Bear was the most well known, and I certainly enjoyed it and its exploration of man and nature. But the others are very good, memorable, and stand on their own. I have read more than half of Faulkner's works, and I was not disappointed. I heard people complain that the characters and their genealogy could interfere, but I did really care that I didn't have an exact picture of who was related to whom, who begat who. (There are detailed genealogical breakdowns on-line, and you could keep one handy if you really need to.) The writing of woods, the many hunts, weather, as well as the characters is just brilliant!

Good Stuff - - If You Can Hang In

This is the 6th or 7th William Faulkner book I've read over the years and they are consistent in a couple of ways: they are about the Old South, and they are worth the read if you can hang in. At his best, Faulkner is like poetry, but often also like a puzzle with one or two pieces missing. His stories usually start in the middle and then jump around time-wise; you are not always sure of whom he is talking about. Also, his existential view is a bit depressing: this is all there is, and there might be a god, but one who is really of no particular use. His sentences are run-on, poorly punctuated, convoluted, and sometimes a page or two long. BUT, if you can wade through all that, the stories are haunting or humorous but never boring. `Go Down Moses' generally gives personal highlights (or lowlights) of the 200-year history of a family that had both black and white branches descended from the same man. Faulkner has unusually keen insight into the racial tension that has plagued our country from even before the beginning, and it shows in his writings.

Faulkner is after all a Pulitzer Prize winner (twice) and even a Nobel Prize winner, and well worth the read - - if you can hang in. At least that is my take on it.

Hard reading but rewarding

Go down Moses is certainly not a very accesible novel, but that can be said of the whole Faulkner-oeuvre.

The novel consists of several stories who are related to each other. To my opinion 'Pantaloon in Black' is not so much related to the rest, which tells the lifestory of Isaac McCaslin.

Especially the last stories were very interesting. In "The old people" Faulkner makes a good connection between man and nature especially the Sam Fathers figure is interesting. Faulkner expands on this theme in "The Bear". The notion that nature is losing in "Delta Autumn" is very strong. Together with the struggle between man and nature, Faulkner explores the relationship between black and white. This is extra complicated by the interracial McCaslin-Beauchamp connection.

What makes this book complicated is Faulkners style. I had to read several passages over and over again to understand what was going on. The complicated McCaslin family and introduction of different names (Uncle Bud an Uncle Buddy are often referred to with their official names) makes it also confusing.

It took me almost two years to read it, but nevertheless a great book and worth reading.

A Fun Chapter Book that Links Modern Times to the Past

Jake and Mandy Strange have an unusual life. A year ago, their parents bought the oldest home in town - an abandoned house on Front Street that is rumored to be haunted. Their parents set up housekeeping on the third floor of the building. The rest of the house is dedicated to a museum - the Strange Museum. The Strange Museum doesn't have a normal theme like other museums do. It's not dedicated to art, or science, or any of the hundreds of other topics a museum might document. Instead, the facility is filled with lost and found objects from around the world, and Mandy and Jake's parents have named their new venture the Strange Museum of Lost and Found.

Jake and Mandy often help their parents run the museum. They give tours, answer visitor questions, and lock up when the day is over. There is one important rule in the museum - don't touch anything! Mandy's curiosity gets the better of her one day, though, while examining an old map that was once used by an unknown famous person. She opens the case, touches the map, and the room begins to spin. Mandy is certain she hears a shout coming from inside the aged piece of paper. Jake, however, doesn't believe Mandy's account of the strange occurrence. When left alone to close the museum, the children rush to the map for a closer examination.

Jake reaches out to the touch the map, and the two are sucked through the document and into the past. The year is 1775, and the unsuspecting duo has been thrust right into the path of Paul Revere making his famous midnight ride! Mandy spooks Revere's horse, and the revolutionary war hero is thrown off is mount and knocked unconscious. Can Mandy and Jake help Paul Revere recover from the fall, and use the formerly lost map to complete his legendary journey to Lexington?

The "Strange Museum" is a series of interesting easy-to-read chapter books that link modern times to historic people and places of the past. They can be used as a springboard to get children to learn more about history, but also stand alone as compelling fantasy stories of magical objects and time-travel. The one negative aspect of "The Midnight Ride" in particular is that Mandy's character is not a good role model for young girls. Mandy is timid, and often relies on her younger brother to lead the way. When Paul Revere is unconscious and his horse startles the children, for example, Mandy leaps behind her younger brother for protection. She passes out when Jake tells her they have traveled back in time. When the children must mount Revere's horse so they can try to complete his ride, the kids argue about who should guide the animal. Even though Mandy is two grades ahead of Jake, and the only one of the two who has ever been on a horse, she makes him take the reigns.

While Mandy's character is disappointing, it doesn't detract too much from the story. Young chapter book readers will focus on the fun concepts of living inside such an unusual museum, and using time-travel to meet important historical figures throughout the ages. "The Midnight Rider" should be an engaging story for most seven to nine-year-olds.
