covers many global topics

The book offers a global view of societies and economic development, with somewhat of an emphasis on how third world nations are faring. Thus various approaches to how a country can progress are described. These include a study of demography, especially of how when birth rates are greater than death rates, the age makeup of a nation can play a vital party in determining its prospects for growth.

Aid for developing nations is explained. For emergencies like famine or after civil unrest, this can greatly help. But classical economic ideas like free trade and comparative advantage are also offered as other pathways of development. The narrative suggests that in the long run, such methods are more sustainable than depending on the charity of foreigners for continually giving aid.

The book is in perfect shape(almost like new) considering that it was used. The writing is a little vague but readable. I am using it for class since it was the book to purchase for it. Regardless, I am very interested in reading it till the end even if in class we don't have to. It has helped me understand the concept on globalization in a broader perspective.

Jerome Mertz, PhD, is professor of Biomedical Engineering and director of the Biomicroscopy Laboratory at Boston University. Prior to joining Boston University, he was a CNRS researcher at the �cole Sup�rieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles in Paris. He specializes in the development of novel microscopy techniques for biological imaging.

Excellent Introduction

I am a graduate student who works on optical microscopes. I actually took the class with the author of this book, so perhaps I am a bit biased, however I found the book to be very insightful.

Pros:
-The book has good coverage of many modern optical imaging techniques, including OCT, Digital Holography, Two Photon microscopy, some of the more standard non-linear techniques, and super-resolution techniques.
-Several gems of intuition in the book
-There is a reasonable amount of math to back up the descriptions, but it is "good" math because it is presented in a way that really reinforces the concepts, it is not math-for-math's-sake like I have seen in many esoteric graduate-level textbooks.
-I like how the references are discussed in the test (i.e. "see [5] for a very readable review, and see [6-8] for more in-depth reviews with an emphasis on ...")
-Intuitive approach to 3D Optical Transfer functions, interesting and unique discussion of radiometery

Cons:
-some of the notation is slightly non-standard, but usually this places more emphasis on the content and less on the math (so not necessarily a con)
-a few of the earlier chapters (on background material) are a little hard for an introduction level book

It provides you with a coherent theoretical framework to adress all classic techniques but also (and most importantly) "new microscopies". This books really makes you understand the physics that underlie optical microscopy and will surely help anyone willing to engage in this exciting field of research.

Be careful...

Great introduction, but lots of the outlined theory doesn't match experimental observation. In particular transmitted light modalities that rely on the interference of fields for example DIC or PC are treated in the same way as florescence modalities, despite a well known non-linearity in the transfer function.

One of the best resources in book form on the alien agenda

I have studied this subject for over 40 years and even recently had an experience that confirmed that I am an abductee myself. I am a computer consultant, x-Special Forces, a college graduate, father of two.
The information is unsettling, but if you are intensly pursuing this subject you may be more involved than you think. The interceded to save me from dying from blood poisioning and I have the scars to prove it.
Another great book, which provides detailed information, particurlaly on the development of a hybred species is The Threat by David M. Jacobs, Ph.D.

Hit and miss

The first half of this book continues the saga of Betty Luca (formerly Betty Andreasson of the Andreasson Affair) and is weird and riveting. Betty herself provides pencil-drawing illustrations, which makes it easier to follow the strangeness being described in the text.
But then Fowler starts going into his own supposed alien experiences, which are vague and not especially interesting. He goes on and on about weird (and completely pointless) coincidences in his life (like the time he got a phone call from someone named Baum when he just happened to be thinking about the Wizard of Oz - who cares!?!), and then treats us to blow-by-blows of his inconclusive hypnosis sessions, which shed precious little light on anything. He spends four whole chapters telling us his story, but there really isn't much for him to tell. Interesting stories to tell your friends, maybe, but nothing worth writing a book about.
The Betty half of the book is definitely worth reading, though. It certainly won't be convincing to the skeptic, but it's a page-turner.

Abductions just down the street.

When I met Ray Fowler in Oct. 1997, he was giving a presentation about UFO's in Beverly Mass. at the Masonic Lodge. I am a sci fi fan and had a fairly well rounded knowledge of the subject.
What I did not know was that some of the events in The Watchers (signed) occured "just down the street" from where we were!
I will always reserve full judgement on the phenomenon itself until I actually experience it. But the book was very detailed about the experiences brought out under hypnosis.
