About the Author
TED TRAVIS grew up on Long Island. While studying voice at the Vienna Conservatory, he came to faith in Christ. Turning his focus from music to ministry, he moved to Denver and began an unexpected life of urban youth development. After a season of training and mentoring leaders in Buffalo and Chicago, Ted and his wife Shelly moved back to Colorado to establish a center for training urban leaders in the practice of transformational discipleship. They have three children and three grandchildren.

I firmly believe that in working with youth, developing leadership and discipleship go hand-in-hand.
In Building Cathedrals, Ted Travis shares a strategy for discipleship with urban youth that links youth leadership development to discipleship. Ted and his wife Shelly served urban youth for nearly 30 years with Neighborhood Ministries in Denver. He now writes, in a very practical way, about some of the lessons learned in an effort to educate and edify the next generation of leaders.
Using personal experiences and real-life stories, the book begins with an honest look at how difficult it is for the traditional church youth program to make a difference in light of the daily realities of youth in the at-risk communities of cities like Denver, Baltimore, St. Louis, or Chicago. It goes on to show the importance of looking beyond the damaging influence of “the hood” and focus on a young person’s divine imprint – God’s unique design. Travis believes the way to accomplish this is through an apprenticeship that leads to youth development. The paradigm shift is from seeing a young person as saved versus unsaved to; are they a disciple, not yet a disciple, or open to becoming a disciple.
Building Cathedrals is organized into three sections; the need based on the context, the foundation of youth development, and the praxis or practical application. Each chapter ends with questions for the reader which could also be used in a group discussion with other youth leaders. Finally, Travis outlines the step by step model he uses, “transformational discipleship” that is rooted in the development of young people as leaders.

Radical Restructure

Since reading “Building Cathedrals” there has been a radical restructuring of how I do urban youth development work. Much of my restructuring came in reflection of myself and my style of leadership. My leading and developing work amongst urban youth must be transformational, and a time where youth can discover how God has created them.
Additionally, the time God gives me with urban youth must be a time where honest answers are given to honest questions about “where is Jesus?” in tuff life situations. When urban youth can explore and define where Jesus shows up in their lives, they become good critical thinkers, alway analyzing their situation to make the best decisions.
Furthermore, in all of the youth’s learning and discovery, the heart of the ministry is for them to practice it. True transformation and development is a space when youth can live out what God has done and will continue to do in their lives amongst their peers in leadership. An aspiration of hope is created when peers see a reflection of themselves leading, they become hungry to do the same!
I say to all in ministry who work with urban youth or desire to work with urban youth, I believe in the teachings of Ted Travis, author of Building Cathedrals. What he unfolds in the his book is making me a much more effective kingdom leader among urban youth. I am sure it can be your truth also, if you give it a shot!
