Fascinating little book.
By Jerry Saperstein
A long time ago, I lived in the Twin Cities and frequented Dudley Riggs’ Brave New Workshop (BNW). I hadn’t thought of the venue in years and was pleasantly surprised to learn that one the authors had purchased the operation in 1997 and that it continues to this day. In fact, this book is about how a husband and wife expanded a satirical theater into the area of essentially teaching motivation and innovation to corporate and institutional clients.
John Sweeney is the primary voice here and I was reminded of a regional trait in the Upper Midwest of a natural humility. Though “I” is a frequently used pronoun here, I never got the sense the Sweeney was preening.
As in improvisational theatre where performers must conjure up scenes on a moment’s notice, this is a book intended to train business and organization employees how to innovate, essentially, by letting their imaginations run without fear or limitation.
This is an unusually interesting entry in this genre and I am somewhat at a loss when it comes to providing a one or two word description. It is a self-help book in one way, an inspirational or motivational book in another, a how-to tome and more.
It is intended to help the reader open their mind to new ways to innovate and, frankly, I think it does that, though I can’t quite explain how it manages those disparate tasks. Very much a singular statement, it is very much worth reading.

Its all in the mind..
By Himri
In 'The Achievement Habit', Bernard Roth has an interesting exercise in his class, like in an improv practice, where a person has to say yes for everything the other one says and later say no/but for everything the other one says. With this exercise you can understand how improv comes with a bit of mind trickery. John Sweeney learnt his ropes of innovative breakthrough in such complex improv situations. Its befitting that his Big Five Innovative Mindset should have do with listening, overcoming fear, declaration, reframing which are all a big part of knowing your mind.
The Innovative Mindset book has interviews with many people who have changed status quo with their listening, driving change by declaration.

IF you have the desire to change, to do things differently...
By Jason W. Womack, M.ED., M.A.
In just 13 chapters, the authors John and Elena not only make the case for change, but they show you how.
Step. By. Step.
If someone asked, "Do you have a fav. chapter?" I'd say: The Art of Practice. Why? Easy, As I read those pages (31-40) I recognized the habits I have. The habits that help; and, the ones that hinder.
If you and your team ONLY has time to read one chapter - however - of this book, I'd say start with chapter 1: "Behavioral Innovation: Remember the Human." For from that chapter, I took the most notes of any other chapter. For example, on the top of page 5 I wrote: "You have to BE...to HAVE. And, before you can do THAT, you have to behave as if it's true."
Look, the future of your organization, effort, initiative depends on you doing things you're doing now better, and doing things you haven't thought of yet to the best of your ability. Too often, people hold on to "what used to work," and as you read this book - The Innovative Mindset - you're going to have to ask yourself, "Am I thinking in innovative, improvisational, forward-moving ways?"
Yes...Or no?
Now...Or later?
When you think about HOW you think: That's your mindset. And, WHAT you do: That's behavior. And, HOW you do it: That's your skillset and toolkit.
If you're looking to the future - for your company, your department, your family, your legacy- and you are thinking of how you design for that, read this book. Before you know it, you're going to feel uncomfortable. And, the longer you can stay there, the longer you pause through the silence, instead of saying um or uh, the more profound your realization can be.
Give yourself the gift of your own attention, ready this book. You will start to see - and then DO - things differently.
That's innovation.
