Excellent Start

O'reilly does a wonderful job writing books in a logical well organized manner.

For a first edition I was hard pressed to find many obvious mistakes. They did their due diligence.

This book is written for the IT PRO, not someone looking to learn Active Directory or other services in Windows Server 2008 hoping to pass a paper cert test. It's assumed you have a broad understanding of Microsoft's culture and product lines and are looking for a practical review of technologies in 2008.

You don't have to be a AD guru to get a lot out of this book either. I would actually recommend it above Microsoft Press books, because instead of trying to indoctrinate you on a set of "standards" Hassell simply gives you a working set of parts under the hood. He doesn't get caught up on the politics or test taking.

I do not recommend this book as a project management guide to upgrading from 2003 to 2008. This isn't one of "those" books. Instead, it's a good book for someone exploring the idea and reasons for upgrading, by being exposed to what is inside 2008 Server first.

As with almost any O'Reilly book, I think this is a definite buy for your IT library. It's well priced too.

Not Quite Definitive but a great overview of Windows Server 2008 nonetheless

This book was obviously written before Windows Server 2008 was actually released and thus I don't think "The Definitive Guide" part of the title quite fits for the title. "A First Look" would be more appropriate instead.

It gives you a great overview of SOME of the new features but it isn't quite thorough as I have discovered a lot of features not even touched in the book. One example is that there is an entire chapter devoted to Active Directory but that chapter only covers the Domain Services role leaving you in the dark about the other Active Directory roles that you can pick from:

Active Directory Certificate Services
Active Directory Federation Services
Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services
Active Directory Rights Management Services

Here are some other roles that the book does not cover at all or barely mentions:

UDDI Services
Streaming Media Services
Print Services
Fax Server

Another thing to note about this book is that it is not a how to book. It does provide some instructions and examples but no where near enough to where you can use this book to start deploying Windows 2008 servers.

I would buy this book strictly if you don't know about the new features of Window Server 2008. It gives you a great overview of many of the features. If your looking for a how to or reference book, stay clear of this title to avoid disappointment

This is a truly helpful book to any server and network administrator, including those with years of experience in the "Windows Server world" and those who are just starting out. Unlike some of the O'Reilly books, this one is filled with crisp and informative screenshots that will guide you through many of the installation and configuration tasks.

It seems like the author did not skip anything, the coverage of the subjects is extensive and well thought-out. While some of the topics may require additional resources if you need in-depth knowledge on them, I've never seen a book that was written to cover all of the possible issues you may encounter as a server administrator working on Windows Server 2008.
Microsoft has introduced a few new things in this server OS and this book does an excellent job covering many intricate details of Windows Server 2008; especially those that differentiate Windows Server 2008 from Windows Server 2003.

Admittedly, some of the chapters - PowerShell or HyperV - just scratch the surface of these complex subjects. However, one would realize, the same publisher offers a plethora of books on the above-mentioned topics. Therefore, such light coverage of HyperV or PowerShell does not diminish the value of this book.

In her first full-length effort, Welch offers women a comprehensive overview of Oriental Medicine. She suggests that the root of problems faced by modern women can be found in an imbalance between sex hormones and stress hormones that results in women "of all ages" experiencing problems ranging from "painful periods, mood swings, fatigue, and insomnia to...uterine fibroids, hot flashes, heart disease and osteoporosis." Welch, a licensed massage therapist who holds a certificate from the state of New Mexico to practice Oriental Medicine and a national certificate to practice acupuncture, wisely offers a disclaimer: "this book should not be taken or construed as medical diagnosis or treatment." She breaks down hormones (the "ambassadors of Yin and Yang"), discusses serious health issues, from breast risks to dementia, and offers methods for restoring hormonal balance. While these primarily include a diet based in organic whole grains, beans, green vegetables, and soy, meditation and exercise, and the reduction of stress inducers (some of her advice will strike readers as familiar), when taken as a whole, the advice is sound. Stellar Book-- Ayurveda, Understanding Hormones, Healing PMS, Cramps, Stress

I can not recommend this book highly enough. It was one of the very best books I have ever read about women's health, and my book is highlighted the whole way through for future reference. Welch really outdid herself, and by other other 5-star reviews, I'm sure you can see how very helpful this book is.

What I really like about this book is that Welch makes sense of hormones, PMS symptoms, and that wigged-out stress I used to feel coursing through my body at the drop of a dime in very simple Ayurvedic/TCM terms. I felt a mounting concern about how my cycles were becoming more painful, feeling stressed all the time, and feeling increasing stagnation in the pelvic area. And with the help of this book, I feel I am on the path to lifelong health.

What I love about this book is that the solutions are simple. Welch sites several studies throughout the whole book. She references studies that show that diet and lifestyle can resolve something like 90% of all of our illnesses. Welch makes a great case for self care, doing yoga, pranayam, and meditation daily, having a daily routine, going walking at the same time of day, oil massages, simple foods during stress, eating healthily. I am so happy to report that my first moon after having read this book has been the best I've had in years, with only dull cramping. I feel confident as I go along with the recommendations in this book, my cycle will also become gentle and consistent once again.

The only thing that I skimmed through was the diet section. If you are into Nourishing Traditions and eating organic, farm-based foods, just keep on doing what you're doing. Although Welch has read Omnivore's Dilema, the book definitely is written with a bias towards vegetarianism. Not a big deal, just something you might want to know. Nourishing Traditions and this book can still go together.

I really loved this book. I was diagnosed with adrenal fatigue when a friend of mine first told me about it. I feel like I learned so much about women's health and nutrition that I would recommend this book to every woman. Mainly it talks about the importance of natural, whole foods to treat hormone imbalance which is, you'll find out, common in our culture, due to chemicals commonly used on our foods, and on (or in) every-day household items. It also reveals some of the recent findings on hormone replacement therapies, women's health issues, and gives advice how to use food as medicine and place an emphasis on Quality of Life as opposed to More = Better mentality.)

I had heard the terms Kapha, Pitta, and Vata (=describes your health constitution) in Ayurveda(=ancient medicine from India) from Perfect Digestion, by Deepak Chopra, but I didn't realize how this simple system resonated with me until I read this book. I have suffered from adrenal fatigue for so long without knowing it, mood swings, and digestive illness for the past three years and wanted a long-term solution rather than quick-fix drugs that my regular doctor was prescribing that would help me temporarily, but have long-lasting, irreversable, side-effects! After having read this book, continuing my Yoga practice, finding a natural doctor, and incorperating the warm-oil massage, described in this book, I have recovered from digestive illness, am healthy and feel good!

It is difficult to find an Ayurvedic doctor, if you need one, but the book has tons of resources. I compromised and found a Naturopath in my area, who has a practice 45 min. away rather than 2 hrs. or more away.

For all that are getting this book--Yay! I think you'll learn a lot!

After searching for the information in this book from allopathy to no avail for several years, I was delighted to read it & to be able to improve my hormone health (with the help of Eastern Medicine). Can't recommend this book highly enough~ especially if you already value TCM/Ayurveda!

Absolute nonsense!

This 'book' and its contents are nothing more than pure fantasy concocted by a Paranormal group that have not done anything and never will do anything to further investigation into the moors murders case.
I have had the great misfortune to have been contacted by this group before this nonsense was published and I was asked to take them seriously. Having spent 50 years living with this case and going over the known facts countless times I can state that this pathetic attempt to gain an insight into more facts and to get into the head of Brady is one of the worst examples of self-publicity and total rubbish I have ever come across.
I have even had cause to contact the Greater Manchester Police about the anguish these people cause to myself and my family (I am the brother of Keith Bennett, the only victim of Brady and Hindley not to have found.) The latest quote I have from the police is 'We all share the same views of the Worsley Paranormal Society and again they have been politely but clearly told where they stand and informed of our views on the lack of legitimacy of their visions/musings/opinions.'

This group of misled and misinformed individuals still trawl the internet claiming, firstly, that they have the support of the police and then they state that they cannot understand why they are not taken seriously! Nobody with any sort of understanding of this case and the details of this case will ever take them seriously, the sooner they take that FACT in the better for all concerned.

A different insight into the Moors Murders

A book which obviously is bothering people ? especially ones who have never even read it yet make a comment. The Secret Key to The Moors Murders is a book that is showing why Ian Brady was influenced by things he read and watched like films. He was living in a time warp and acted out much in a fantasy world he created. By using History and historical people he admired, like Oliver Cromwell, writers and poets and especially the Industrial Revolution,he was able to map the areas to this and create a puzzle field where he buried clues to what this was all about. The writers and Geniuses like James Joyce, W B Yeats, T S Eliot and the surrealism Artists of Paris.. I explain why I am able to see these .. then I have gone deeper into the Occult and Crowley and the areas he visited to see why these were important to him and possible sites for other victims. Its complex and no wonder he has been able to hide behind all of this and keep his game going. Even the names of people he writes to mean more to him, like Cowley and even the name Bennett..

Good reference for experienced astrodynamicists

This book does what its preface promises. It provides a ready reference for help in solving mission design problems. The book really requires some familiarity with astrodynamics before you open it. A strength is reliance almost entirely on algebraic solutions, rather than proceeding from a vector approach. This has made the examples very useful in the astro course I teach, since most of my students are weak in vectors. The book is useful for practitioners and advanced students.

I can't comment on the software. My copy came with a 3 1/2" floppy. I have not had a computer capable of reading this format for a while.....

Excellent Practitioner's Reference

This is an excellent reference for aerospace engineer's to have on their desk. It summarizes all the necessary equations used in the design of spacecraft missions. It is not a "deep" book in the sense that there are minimal derivations. It is not a "tutorial" book, either, for anyone new to the field. For a tutorial and/or in depth mathematical derivations, look elsewhere (e.g., Battin: Introduction to the Mathematics and Methods of Astrodynamics or Vallado: Fundamentals of Astrodynamics and Applications). However, the author is true to the goal he states in his preface: "I like a book that will fit in your briefcase." Despite being very thin, it has proven very useful for me in my work. I highly recommend it! (The ORBWIN software included with the book is also highly useful.)

Good text

This text presents the astrodynamic aspects of a spacecraft mission design. The text is very short (about 140 pages without appendixes) but very dense with a lot of equations and information. Derivations are cut short and you need some basis in orbital mechanics in order to appreciate the book.

This is not a book to learn orbital mechanics per se but how to plan a interplanetary spacecraft mission from launch to arrival.

About the Author
Jeremy J. Siegel is a professor of finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Siegel received his Ph.D. from M.I.T. and taught for four years at the University of Chicago before joining the Wharton faculty in 1976. He has written and lectured extensively about the economy and financial markets, monetary policy and interest rates, and stock and bond returns. Along with heading the macroeconomics module of the Morgan Bank Finance Program in New York, he is the academic director of the U.S. Securities Industry Institute and is on the Advisory Board of the Asian Securities Industry Association. Professor Siegel is courted by nearly every Wall Street firm as a consultant and lecturer and has appeared on CNBC, PBS, Wall Street Week, and NPR.

The One Best Book On Stocks Since Graham

The basic theme throughout is simply that stock returns (in all developed nations, though at differing slopes, pp. 88-90) regress to a mean, as bonds, and all other investment alternatives, do not. That’s one point. By taking the long historical view (from the dawn of the American republic), Siegel also demonstrates (Chapter 6, pp. 93-103) that in this country over periods of five years and longer, real stock returns (after inflation) stray from our mean return (6.5%) less and less, until at thirty years the observed deviations are half what standard statistics expect. So stocks are both much more volatile short-term—cf. Mandelbrot and Hudson, The (mis)Behavior of Markets—and much less volatile long-term, than Modern Portfolio Theory says they should be. That’s point #2. And, his third crucial point, value strategies (Chapter 12, pp. 173-193, on low-P/E, high-dividend stocks) consistently surpass the market indices by 2% or more in annual compounded returns. I know of no other book which has made any one of these three points so clearly and demonstrated them so forcefully with historical data and mathematical analysis. Ben Graham, to be sure, made the case for value investing decades ago, and does a better job of understanding and presenting the process than anyone else before or since, but of course he couldn’t come close to the range and depth of modern databases and computing power to undergird his argument. Siegel has written the one book since Graham’s Intelligent Investor that everyone should read and re-read before presuming to buy any security other than an index fund.

So, for instance, I needed to know that stocks have never failed to offer a positive real return over any period of seventeen years or more. Long-term bonds, in contrast, since the Civil War have outperformed stocks in just one 30-year period (by a minuscule .05% per year!), as interest rates fell from 16% in late 1981 to 2% in 2011—but the real return on these “safe” investments was negative for the entire post-war period before that, and likely will be for years to come. And Siegel repeatedly makes the point that especially when we think about retirement the only safety that matters is the assurance of rising purchasing-power over spans of decades.

The book is not without its limitations. I don’t think Siegel understands options or other derivatives; his faulty discussion of stock index options in the 4th edition has been abbreviated, but his remaining remarks are misleading at best. Consequently the major new sections in this edition, which deal with the recent financial crisis, while fairly sound (e.g. showing how slight a role Fannie and Freddy played), understate the impact of synthetic credit default swaps, which by the time the fever broke had made the subprime mortgage market five times larger than the mess the bankers and mortgage brokers had created in the first place. Hence next to no one had any idea how immense the problem really was, though a few (see M. Lewis, The Big Short) saw enough to profit hugely.

Other material in Siegel’s 378 pages adequately and sensibly covers major areas of historical interest (the primary stock indices, money, monetary policy and the gold standard), analyzes other financial and economic crises, surveys current issues (the business cycle, market responses to current events) and concerns (the developed world’s retirement “crisis”, on which he is quite optimistic), and I could cavil here and there or suggest other specialized treatments. But what he has to say on these topics is sufficient (and his history of the S&P 500 is excellent) for firmly embedding the three points with which I began, which are points every investor should ponder long and hard.

But how many of us will profit from them? On p. 97 he mentions the allure of “safer” alternatives which do after all outperform stocks, over periods of one or two years, nearly 40% of the time. I don’t know that he sees how deep the pain goes for individuals watching dollars vaporize by the thousands, dollars which a bank account would at least have preserved and guaranteed. Nor, I think, does he see how hard it would be for asset managers to follow his principles when markets soar and “irrational exuberance" reigns triumphant; sticking to a long-term strategy is impossible when benchmark risk means your assets are marching out the door. Siegel’s work will most benefit those who know not just the concepts but themselves. It hurts to play from behind, alone, trusting the odds, trying to trust yourself. Long-term investment is a discipline less of intellect than of temperament and character. But the discipline of study and thought is still part of it, and Siegel’s history and mathematics keep me mindful of what the true odds are. In this and earlier editions, Stocks for the Long Run is one of just six books (cf. my review of M. Mauboussin More Than You Know) which have decisively shaped how I think about what I do.

Still a Classic, but Added some Garbage and Omitted some Great Stuff from the 3rd Edition

As an experienced investor who has read over a hundred investment books, Stocks for the Long run has always been in my top 5. Eager for updated data and analysis, I read the new 5th edition, but sadly, it added some uninsightful reviews of the credit crisis and took out some really good stuff, including data on returns following high sentiment, fed cuts, and economic cycles. One of my favorite items omitted was about the justified PE on the nifty fifty and what growth rates justify stock stock prices. Still a great book, but I think the 3rd edition is much better.

Historical Investing Information for Quantitative Thinkers

Psychologically, almost every human being believes that he or she is potentially able to outperform every other human being. This optimism is a useful quality for spurring people on to strive for better results. When it comes to investing, it can lead to harmful results, however. Too much risk can lead to too little reward.
This book is the best summary of the historical data on investing. Some of the data go back to 1802.
Rather than summarize everything the book shows, let me focus in on a few key points that might slip past you. These are contrary to the conventional wisdom in some cases, and different from what you will hear on television. I suggest you pay careful heed.
(1) Diversification and historical data suggest that you should be sure to invest outside of the United States with part of your financial assets. Currently, for many people, this should be up to 25 percent of the total portfolio in international stocks. These stocks should be equally weighted between Europe, Asia, and emerging countries.
(2) Written in 1997 for this edition when the Dow was 7400, nothing in the book justifies a Dow of 11,000. If you look at the long-term chart of stock-price multiples, there has been a severe downdraft after the two other times when multiples expanded so much. This suggests caution.
(3) Small cap value stocks provided superior returns historically, and those returns were highly concentrated in January of each year. This suggests a potential trading strategy opportunity of owning those stocks in January and shifting into other stocks at the end of January, depending on the 200 day moving average trends.
(4) Almost no professional investors keep up with the market averages over 10 years. Although he doesn't express it, individual investors tend to do worse. Why will it be different for you over the next 10 years? Therein lies the case for index funds and the Dow 10 strategy (buy the 10 highest yielding Dow Industrial stocks each January).
(5) The main cause of more rapid stock price growth in the last 30 years was the ending of the gold standard. Central banks pump up the money supply after gold is taken away, which expands multiples. Over time, this also drives up inflation, which is brutal on stock-price multiples. Alan Greenspan is very aggressive in building up the money supply, even when he is raising interest rates. All of that money eventually causes prices to rise. This will probably happen in this country as the growth in the baby boom population reaching 45 slows. Companies eventually overcome inflation, but the near-term losses can be large. Witness the fact that many Internet stocks are down over 80 percent in the last year.
Whether you agree with these perspectives or not, you should be aware of them. Professor Siegel has done us a service by making the information available. On the other hand, this book needs a third edition to update the data to reflect on the current multiples.
If you are not a quantitative thinker, you will not like this book. Just read my comments and think about them.
If you are a quantitative thinker, you will get many new and important perspectives from this work which suggests that it's not a random walk after all.
Good luck with your investing. Before taking any large risks, be sure you know what the risks are and think through how you will handle them if they turn out to be irresistible forces pushing you in the wrong direction.

Not Impressed At all

First of all, I think some of the rituals and such in this book borders on some creepy stuff. I had heard alot of stuff about Frost tradition wicca, and I just thought that it was wrong, plain and simple.
For example, when a young girl becomes of age and is ready to be initiated, she is ritually deflowered? UGH. All the talk about phalluses made me queasy.
And the handfasting ceremonies in this deal with the bride and groom cutting themselves and then mixing their blood? Sounds just downright DANGEROUS to me.
I don't practice fluffy bunny stuff by a LONG shot, but I want nothing to do with these wierd and creepy rituals. JMO

The Book That Offends Wiccans and Christians Alike! BUY IT!

Before the fluffy bunny wicca of Silver Ravenpoof, there was WICCA. REAL WICCA, with hair growing out of it! The Frosts were the pioneers of wicca in America, peddling their "Magic Power of Witchcraft" book in comic books with ads for Sea Monkeys. If you wanted to study wicca back in the 1970's, you went to the Frosts books or mail order school. There really wasn't much else out there. This whole idea of the Frost's Wicca being an "abberation" is ludicrous. For a while, it WAS WICCA, period. The publisher of TWB went bankrupt shortly after its publication (who says Witchcraft isn't bad luck?), and it has been re-published and retitled as "The Good Witch's Bible", which only makes the book's title ironic when you read it.
OK, now I'll let the book speak for itself. I'm quoting from the new edition. Page 73 (a description of a wedding ritual) :
The woman cuts the man's forearm so that she draws blood. (The easiest way to produce the necessary cut is to pinch the flesh with one hand and cut with the other.) ... Man and woman each cut themselves; the man allows his blood to fall on hers.
[If all the sex doesn't give you AIDS, that one ritual should]
Page 159 says:
"It is inherent in Wicca belief that marriage is mainly a matter of the mind, not of sex. Can you allow the woman you live with to have sex with another in the perfect faith that she will return to you and you will feel more, not less, loving toward her? This tenet is obviously the reverse of the Judeo-Christian [sic] 'thou shalt not.'...our rule is that twice a year every male and female in the coven will live with a female or male other than the spouse for one full lunar month. It is usual for the males to change homes, though in many cases, if more convenient, the women agree to change."
[So, wife swapping is part of Wicca, even if they don't call it this! ]
Page 66 "The physical attributes of male and female virginity are destroyed at the youngest possible age, either by the mother or by a doctor. In the female case, the hymen is painlessly broken surgically. In the male case, the mother makes absolutely sure that the foreskin can be drawn fully back by cutting the underside attachment membrane"
[But even more twisted are the following instructions on how to deflower a girl who wasn't born into Wicca. It is done at menstration, which happens around age 11 or 12.]
Page 66:"At the last sabbat or eshbat before the initiation, the female novice is given the sacred phallus and the instruction sheet in Table 5 so that she can learn to insert and remove the phallus quickly and comfortably. She is also taught how she should lie and what she should do during the initiation ceremony...Throughout the fast the female novice wears her phallus, and at some time during the fast the novices are given a demonstration of introitus by a couple selected by the coven. The novice makes her own decision on contraception or lack of it. If she needs advice or help, the sponsor is the one to give it. (The IUD is the recommended Wicca preventive.)"
[So little girls get a live demonstration by an adult couple on how to use a dildo! And why do underage girls need contraceptives if no one is having sex with them?]
Table 5 are the instructions to be given for the deflowering pubescent Wiccan girls: "You have been entrusted with two phalli; these are in our care until your initiation. We would like you to be initiated at the next coven meeting, which will take place on ... This means that, excluding your menstruation time, you have three weeks to prepare your muscles for introitus. Your father or your sponsor will help you if you have any difficulties or pain."
[On page 99 are the instructions for making the dildo! So a father raping his daughter with a didlo is part of Wicca!Suddenly stories about Satanic Ritual Abuse aren't so far fetched, huh?]
There's really a lot more I could have mentioned. It's practically impossible to open this book to any page and find something that won't offend somebody! There is racist stuff about black people being better at Wicca because they talk to spirits, Asians are better too, while whites are slow, so covens should be segregated at least at first. Christ got his powers by gay oral sex. The family unit is to be disolved and replaced by the coven. Kids are to spend once a month with a different family (for God only knows what!). Kids are to learn everything about sex at the earliest possible age with nothing held back, "no bird or bees". This is so Wiccan kids won't be raised like Christian kids who are raised as "repressed perverts" as the author puts it! Yes, it is one of the vilest books ever written! PLEASE, SOMEBODY BUY COPIES FOR BOB LARSON AND RUSH LIMBAUGH! LOL! It's been in print in some form or another for 30 years. Somebody out there must be doing these crazy things! BUY THIS BOOK AND GIVE A DOSE OF REALITY TO THAT WICCA CURIOUS TEEN! BUY IT FOR YOUR MINISTER, YOUR LOCAL CHIEF OF POLICE, THE DEPARTMENT OF CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES! The possibilites are endless! Buy the new edition for $10, don't be an idiot and spend $166 for the old one. If you do, you are an even bigger idiot than the average occult geek.

This very short story is okay but I would not pay to read it. It's about Layne forgetting to take care of things and not studying for school and then getting a spanking from her husband. Not very interesting for a story line.
