Don't Miss This One!

From the moment I opened the book, I was drawn into the characters and their mission. I couldn't put it down! The expertly developed plot carefully led me down a path and into a world that I had previously known very little about. This gripping piece of fiction carries with it a big dose of reality, and left me wanting both to read more from this author, and to help the cause of organ donation.

Review: THE ORGAN BROKER by Stu Strumwasser

THE ORGAN BROKER is a gripping contemporary novel with a solid factual foundation. As the author explains, the shortage of legally available transplants is horrible, and consequently the black market for organs thrives ( and undoubtedly, some illegal brokers are yanking in money because of it--think of the money made during Prohibition in the U.S., but on a grander and global scale).

I really enjoyed this novel and anticipate more from this author. Surprisingly, I empathized with Jack (New York Jack), despite his behavior choices. I think his confidence--even in his strengths, he is less than self-confident, undoubtedly due to his abusive upbringing. I liked him, oddly enough.

Promising author, good book

This is an unusual book in that I found it heavy handed and amateurish in many respects, yet riveting to read. It is definitely a plot driven sort of story without a lot of character development or subtlety, but I was willing to overlook that because I was hooked into the story from early on. I read the Kindle version and there were a number of formatting errors (mostly paragraphs than ran together in dialogue) but I also didn't let that detract from my enjoyment of the story. I thought this was a first time author but have since found out he has an earlier book. The author shows promise. The book is worth reading for story line and theme.

A hammer!

R. Stull makes a comprehensive and profound review of the boundary layer meteorology in his book. I consider this book to be a most useful tool for any scientist concerned with the troposphere, for all environmental engineers having to do with air quality, and for all micrometeorologists. Just like a hammer! One of the first to get for one's library. It contains the general descriptions of the usual subjects, thoroughly and well explained. Then it also contains extensive descriptions of different models used to make calculations. This is why I am willing to pay its... unfortunately not-very-low price.

Very comprehensive book, cover all the important topics in Boundary Layer phenomena's: friction - turbulence - stability -fluxes- advection of atmospherics' variables etc' . It is suitable for a student who has already some familiarity with Physics and Calculus (including several variables, vector calculus and partial derivative) I think its excellent book in a fair price.

They were always the popular guys in high school: the jocks. And even though their football team was lackluster and their grades were average, at best, they were still the clique that "ran" the school. Sure, they had occasional run-ins with the police, but in the affluent town of Glen Ridge, it was understood that boys would be boys. Their parents always paid the damages, and the affairs were kept politely quiet. When 13 of these young men were accused of sexually assaulting a mentally disabled girl, the town rallied behind them and did its best to ostracize the girl. It is a case that is still generating headlines today, and Lefkowitz has written a compelling account of the incident and the resulting trials. He examines a part of American culture that appears to condone wildness and aggression in its young males and passive servitude in the females. Our Guys is an insightful work that could be as fundamentally important, and as widely read, as Mary Pipher's Reviving Ophelia (1994). Highly recommended. Eric Robbins

Long read, well worth it.

Yes as some other reviewers mentioned it is a long book. It needs to be in order to dissect the sickness of this community. In addition to the main storyline, the story of "Ryan's Wreck" also made me sick to my stomach. Who thinks it is OKAY to do such things?! This book delves deeply into "privilege." I live near a community very similar to Glen Ridge. This author is spot on in descriptions of such areas. What floors me is how many of the parents involved had no idea their lovable little moppets were capable of such deeds. And it wasn't just the guys, as Mari Carmen Ferez (sp?) demonstrates. If you have seen the movie, the book does follow closely (the book came first is my guess).

insightful and disturbing analysis of a culture that exists

I grew up in a community next to Glen Ridge that modeled similar values to those in the book. I left in '67 to join the Peace Corps and my own beliefs that the values portrayed in those seemingly perfect lives were self serving and morally wrong were affirmed by my experiences in the world. I mistakenly moved back to another neighboring community next to Glen Ridge from New York when I had a child twenty years later. Like the Fabers*, I wanted my child to be safe and have a beautiful green place to play like Brookdale Park. I took my young child to Carteret Park in a stroller many afternoons to play on the jungle gym. After a few years living there and at the beginning of my child's school age, it became clear that the faces in these communities had changed, but the shallow values were still there. We didn't join the Peace Corps again but we feel grateful that we could, as teachers, raise our child in an international community in an Asian country where the Glen Ridge values of 'look good, have heaps of money and bully other people/kids around' still come from all over the U.S. but they are balanced by children from 50 other nations who bring a rich diversity of cultures and languages to a third culture community. I will always be indebited to you Bernard Lefkowitz for affirming my terrible adolscence as something that was wrong with the educational system and the adults in charge, not me. My family tried to do the right thing in striving to place us in a good community and in the end, it worked out. I am living in the world and teaching my child and others to respect and honor all peoples. Your observations cut to the core of my experience, many of which I still remember as being painful ones of exclusion for one reason or another, never valid ones. The denial that this community sustained is sickening as is the 'jock worship' witnessed by all the truly good kids who suffered these boys' sick bullying behavior as young children and in middle school right on through high school and into college. The book is eminently important for parents of both girls and boys and for all educators as we move into the increasingly problematic twenty first century. We all need to be watching the children, all the time.

A frightening expose of life in suburbia

This book exposes the dark and frightening underside of a life of supposed tranquility in the lily white and privilged confines of suburbia, and details how "the boys will be boys" mentality led to the awful rape of a retarded girl by high school jocks and how a town that glorified its male, so-so high school athletes, could somehow defend the conduct of the jock-rapists and could blame the victim as a slut and a Lolita seductress. Compelling reading and a real page turner that deserves to be a best seller!

Just a bunch of quotes

I thought I was going to be getting an actual book with a lot of good arguments, backed up by political insight and observations. But it turns out, this book is just a compilation of a bunch of Ann Coulter's quotes from previous articles, books, or lectures. I read about half the book, then got bored from brain destimulation. For my first Coulter book, this was a big disappointment.

Very well done, of course. It's Ann Coulter! It's very witty and I love that she's reading the book herself. It doesn't flow as much as her other books because as she has said, "It's more of a quote book." So it's very funny quotes here and there for the conservative republican that needs a good honest laugh while hearing the truth!

Not a real book: buy her other works

I'm probably Ann's biggest fan, but this is not a real book. It is a collection of quotations from her earlier books and other sources. While the idea of providing her enemies a reference volume so they can quote her more accurately is fun, it makes for dull reading. The best parts are the introductions to each section that are new materal.

Buy this digitally.

The book is a great help if you actually have the time to use it. Since my assignments were for my own good and not points it was easy to ignore and not use the book BUT the answers are in the back so it became a good study guide for exams simply by reading through the answers. Maybe if I had had it digitally then I could have done the pages on a "write on PDF" app or something.

Is this the best use of the book? No
Is this the best you are going to get when you are in nursing school? Probably.
