A warning....

1940, a series of installments in Liberty magazine tells the story of the Third Reich, with help from the Japanese and Russians, attacking the US in 1945. It must have seemed weird to the American readers at the time. A surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, submarines warfare, massive bombing runs against civilian targets. Even atomic bombs! Something out of a Sci-Fi novel by Wells.
Yet here it is, 2010, and one can't help but find it just as weird and amazing. On one hand the USA ended up going to war much sooner than 1945. And while the author tried to make the combat as realistic as possible, using sources within the military, it still seems almost clean and orderly compared to the horrors of the real thing. Hindsight is of course perfect but did people really think, at least those in 1940, that they would be able to stay out of the war? Did they really need a warning to see the future of the Earth if Nazi Germany won against the USSR and the Empire of Great Britain? And the ending is FAR from a happy one.

Propaganda

As far as propaganda goes, this is a wonderful piece of work. Reading it in that light made the book a very enjoyable experience. Although it was writen before the War, it brings the chaos we tend to associate with foreign lands very close to home, and it does remind us that our swollen sense of safety could be quickly destroyed; that we are not "that" different from the rest of the world. We are as prone to bad judgement and errors as all others. And although it is supposed to lift our morale, it leaves a bitter taste lost innocence ... of a time of pride and patriotism we Americans might not have any more.

About the Author
Barbara A. Anderson, DrPH, CNM, FACNM, FAAN, is the Director of the post-master's Doctor of Nursing Practice program (DNP) at Frontier Nursing University, Hyden, Kentucky. She is co-editor of "Caring for the Vulnerable: Perspectives in Nursing Theory, Research, " and Practice (2008 & 2012) and was awarded the American College of Nurse Midwives Book of the Year Award for "Reproductive Health: Women and Men's Shared Responsibility" (2005). Dr. Anderson has served on the editorial board of the "Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health" and currently serves as a journal referee for "Medical Anthropology Quarterly" and "Social Science and Medicine". She has served as chair of the Population, Reproductive and Sexual Health section of the American Public Health Association. Dr. Anderson led an urban initiative in California that won "The Safe Motherhood Initiative-USA Model Program" award. As a program consultant in Africa, Asia and Latin America, she has prepared nurses, midwives and physicians in public health and the midwifery model of care.

Not a good choice...

This was required for a course and, like so many other courses at the Master's level, we never used it. My one piece of advice- unless you have an assignment due the first day of class, do not purchase the texts on the list until you have spoken to the instructor. It would have saved me a lot of money- not just with this one text.
I did read the textbook and it was terrible. It was poorly written and had no information that was helpful to me in my Nursing program.

Buy another textbook. This is such a horrendous read and there are are, equally or lesser priced textbooks, that are of far better quality. Just UGH.

About the Author
David Pawson: born in 1930, was the son of a Methodist minister, his grandfather, a Professor of Agriculture. He began his career with a degree in Agriculture at Durham University. After completing an MA in Theology at Cambridge University, David became a chaplain in the Royal Air Force, before pastoring a number of churches in England including the Millmead Centre in Guildford which became a model for many UK church pastors. In 1979 David left Millmead to develop a wider international Bible teaching ministry. Millions of copies of his ‘Unlocking the Bible’ teachings have been distributed to over 120 countries. He is a writer who speaks with clarity and uncompromising faithfulness to the Scriptures. He is widely considered to be one of the world’s finest biblical expositors alive today.

It's clear and easy to understand

This is the only Commentary on Romans that I want to read. It's clear and easy to understand. It's priceless to me as a pastor who needs to prepare a sermon every week. I love the conversation style of the writing. It truly nourishes my soul.

I think this misleading commentary is pretty much useless to most Christians

David Pawson likes to shift the focus away from the glorious Gospel message explained in the Book of Romans. So he'd rather focus on a minor issue concerning Jewish believers in the Roman church. I think this misleading commentary is pretty much useless to most Christians.

About the Author
Timothy Beatley is Chair of the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning and Teresa Heinz Professor of Sustainable Communities at the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia, where he has taught for over twenty-five years. He is the author of many books, including Planning for Coastal Resilience, Biophilic Cities, and Green Urbanism (Island Press).

a door opening gift

In the late 90's and early 2000's, I was building green homes in Cleveland and conducting greenbuilding seminars for builders, contractors and homeowners. When I discovered E.O.Wilson's concept of biophilia I was so taken by its broad implications that I began each seminar series with a discussion of the notion. How I could have enriched my seminars if I had a copy of Tim Beatley's book! To know that you are part of a much larger movement that respects the natural world in so many imaginative ways and that the movement is worldwide is a true inspiration. Tim has offered us a gift that is special for those of us who have been trying to be faithful to the earth, but is an invitation to young people everywhere to expand the wonderful horizon he has revealed. Makes me wish I was 18 again instead of 80!!

A business library that fits in your pocket

Having gone through the IMD experience myself, I was amazed how Jacques managed to summarize the main concepts of the 2,5 meters of folders I have in my study into a book one can easily take anywhere. I have recently used it for the preparation of an interview and it was a great help. In Addition Jacques captured the inspiration and a hint of the transitional nature of an MBA experience. This book is worthwhile for anyone who did or wants to do an MBA as well as the lifelong learners of the business community.

The writing is to-the-point, the intent is clear, and the overall impact is quite positive.
