Richard interprets the novel in terms of Christian theology. He sug�gests that the author, like Saint Paul, may have been a converted Chris�tian. The novel is seen as a romantic history of the rise of Christianity in the midst of Buddhism. What it advocates, he believes, is not Confucian�ism. or Taoism, or Primitive Buddhism, but rather something superior to all three - Mahayana Christianity.

Included in this collection are poems about the bison, seed beadwork, and the Red River Cart, and some poems employ elements of the Michif language, which, along with French and Cree, was spoken by Dumont’s ancestors. About the Author
Marilyn Dumont’s poetry has won provincial and national awards. She has been the writer-in-residence at five Canadian universities and the Edmonton Public Library as well as an advisor in the Aboriginal Emerging Writers Program at the Banff Centre. She teaches sessional creative writing for Athabasca University and Native studies and English for the University of Alberta. She lives in Edmonton, Alberta.

A pull of the bow across the string of the fiddle

I don't often start a review by saying that a book reminded me of something else, but this gorgeous book of poetry was accompanied by a haunting song that I heard sung live several years ago. The Wailin Jennys introduced a song that they had recently written called "Starlight." The women explained that, in their native province, scandal had broken when it had been revealed that police were picking up First Peoples' women late at night, and leaving them to die in the cold miles from home.

The words of Marilyn Dumont's THE PEMMICAN EATERS feel like the pull of the bow across the string of the fiddle, the high notes hit by a woman in childbirth, the clutch at one's heart when one hears bad news. The words are gorgeous as the matters they call to mind are hard to think with, hard to let in; for me, I needed the melody of someone else's song so that I could try to translate how Dumont's words made me feel.

Rather than quote from a poem out of context, even though the words are capable of standing on their own, I will suggest that you purchase this book and support the work of this artist.

frustrated by wasted time.. :(

I'm sorry to say that, I've been a bit frustrated by this book ,the sensation is to have wasted time and money,
the first part take an installation path which is incomplete ( but anyway all kubernetes installation docs are incomplete on internet (there are too many moving parts), and having a comprehensive guide would take a whole book , the only good guide I have found is the coreos official guide for kubernetes on their website )
then after that there are a tons of redundant (about 200 pages) examples of yaml files for pod,service,replica creation ( all almost identical ) and with statement like:
"now we are creating a mysql cluster" or a "cassandra cluster" , but the results is only a replication controller infront of docker images, tons of pages are full of yml for those "microservices"
but all are just samples that can be (and probably has been) created looking for images in [...] than using a pod,rc,srv yaml template in and remplacing the ports and the docker image name. a "cluster" is something different.. none of these example is production ready and could have been 100x more useful just 2 , 3 example but studied than 30 copy-pasted hello-world "cluster" example.

Don't waste your time and money on this

Don't waste your time and money on this, it says you will learn "How to use Kubernetes with NoSQL Databases" or "How to use Kubernetes with RDBMS", but it does not. All it does is telling you how to running several individual MySQL or MongoDB pods, and it's totally useless since they are not clustered together.

Fascinating, but Lovecraft beginners should start elsewhere

In terms of readability or pure enjoyment, this title ranks low among the myriad Lovecraft titles. However, for the Lovecraft devotee, it offers enlightening insights into the author's writing. There is quite a hodge-podge of tales to be found in these pages. "The Tomb" is a fairly standard horror piece, "Imprisoned With the Pharoahs" is a story ghost written for Harry Houdini which I count among Lovecraft's lesser tales, "In the Walls of Eryx" is a compelling, uniquely Lovecraftian science fiction story set on Venus. "The Horror of Red Hook," while harkening to the types of unworldly themes Lovecraft came to be known for, is a somewhat dense story which I had unaccustomed trouble reading--largely, I feel, because it was written in the third person. "The Festival," "He," and "The Strange High House in the Mist" concern ancient rites and hints of unearthly terrors while also hinting at the dream worlds that Lovecraft so often contemplated; not surprisingly, I find these stories to be the best ones in this collection.
The really interesting parts of this book consist of a number of early tales and fragments. There are four stories Lovecraft wrote during his teens, and it is almost incredible to see the distinctive Lovecraft voice and style so well developed at such an early age. "Poetry and the Gods" and "The Street" are unusual and bear an ethereal air that did not find its way into his mature writings, while "The Beast in the Cave" and "The Alchemist" foreshadow the stories whose fame we now celebrate. The four story fragments are fascinating; though incomplete, they easily fit into a Lovecraftian world in that certain sometimes obscure references point to elements, characters, and themes developed more fully in other stories. One begins to see that all of Lovecraft's tales, Mythos and non-Mythos, share a mysterious thread or foundation. It is for this reason that I would not recommend reading this book without having read some of Lovecraft's better known stories. Certainly, those not yet fascinated by Lovecraft will reap small rewards from reading the fragments and early writings, and the other tales collected here are much less satisfying than those of the Cthulhu Mythos.

NOT LOVECRAFT'S BEST

I guess THE BEST OF H.P. LOVECRAFT spoiled me. When I got to this book, I found the stories not near as frightening or appealing. There are some fragments in this book, though, and the most important thing is that they ARE fragments. No pastiche authors here, thank you. Then there's a part of the book showing off some of HPL's earlier work. It's interesting to compare his earlier work with his later work, to see how he matured as a writer. By the way, did you know that HPL ghost-wrote a story for HARRY HOUDINI? I didn't either, until I read this book. I give this book 3 stars because I feel that only books that are TRULY OUTSTANDING deserve 4 or 5 stars. Only books that are absolutely terrible and have no merit deserve 1 or 2. So I give this book a conservative 3 stars.

Engaging dramatic plot, but doesn't fit with the period

Charlotte Ribard, whose world has just fallen apart, takes out her feelings of betrayal on Francis Storbridge, her father's former secretary and her one-time friend. He had come to help her when she was lost and alone and devastated; she assumed that he was tarred with the same brush as her villainous, murdering father.
Five years later, Francis is an MP and in a position of some influence, and Charlotte desperately needs his help. Since he had been in love with her for years anyway, his pride led him to state - as a challenge - that the price of his assistance was marriage to her. He never expected that she'd agree, but she did, so they marry, a marriage of convenience in which Charlotte doesn't trust Francis one bit and his pride won't allow him to tell her the truth about himself.
Into this relationship add the return of Charlotte's father, who now wants to plot to ruin Storbridge for his failure to support his plan for a new railway. This leads us into the political sub-plot of the book. Unlike the last reviewer, I enjoyed this very much and it was, in fact, the best-researched and most entertaining part of the book. One minor criticism at this point is that there were rather too many characters to keep track of; admittedly, some of them were from previous books in the series, but I had not read those previous books (both now out of print), and had to keep reminding myself of who these people were and what their relationship was to the protagonists.
I have very mixed feelings about this book. While I enjoyed the political sub-plot, I found it very difficult to concentrate on the romance and the personal interaction between the characters, because quite simply very few of these characters belonged anywhere but in the present day. The dialogue was far too modern for the period. Now, while I don't expect writers to stuff their dialogue with obselete words, neither do I expect to see contractions all over the place and modern expressions used. At one point, Charlotte even says 'bloody hell'; now, while it's just possible that a gentleman of that period would use such an expression, a lady would never have done so.
Period behaviour is also very much lacking - I was incredulous to see Francis' young sisters-in-law (aged 17 and 11) talking openly about mistresses, and to him as well. If young unmarried girls even knew of the existence of such a thing as mistresses - and they usually didn't - they would never dream of mentioning this in front of adults. Serena, who is 11, was treated as if she was at least 17, both in her conversation and in the way she was allowed to stay up late, join the adults at dinner (even formal dinners, which would be unheard of) and at the theatre.
Grant's male characters also treated the women in a way which, although common nowadays, was completely unheard of two hundred years ago. No man ever discussed anything of any importance with his wife or daughters if he could avoid it; the idea that Francis, Paul, Silverton and Robert would involve their wives in their planning is ridiculous for the period.
And finally, a two-year-old being able to pronounce 'explosion' perfectly and know what the word means?! Please!
While there were parts of this book I enjoyed, I was jolted out of the story by historical impossibilities far too often for me to read anything else by Tracy Grant.

Mom of 3 with severe nerve tissue damage due to breast surgery

If you had breast reduction survey and plan to breastfeed, this book is a MUST.

I was not able to breastfeed my first child because I had prepared for lactation just as other women do. Only after my baby would spend 45 minutes trying to nurse and the lactation consultant's scale showed she was not able to get more than a few drops of milk, did I realize that my breast reduction had damaged essential nerves and there was a disconnect between milk production and the "let down" function. My brain did not register a baby at the breast. It was a traumatic experience for me & baby. By the time we came up with a plan of attack, it was too late: baby was hooked on the bottle doctors told me I HAD to use if baby was to survive.

This book was heaven-sent! I purchased it several months before I gave birth to my second child, used all of their tips and successfully breastfed my 2nd and 3rd children. I had to use the SNS system with the second child, but I was prepared and where other women stock on bottle feeding supplies, I stocked on SNS stuff. With my 3rd child, I only used the "tricking your brain into believing you are feeding twins" strategy and rented an industrial-grade breast pump before due date. I used it for 10 months. My 3rd child was solely breastfed for 10 months and then he took bottles with my frozen milk into age 1 - never had formula.

This book and this book alone is the reason for my success story.

A Must Have for BFAR Mothers

I purchased this book prior to my first child being born in 2008, 5 years post surgery, because I KNEW I wanted to breastfeed. I just wasn't sure that I'd be able to. In order to give myself the best chance possible I purchased this book. I am ever so grateful that I did. There is a wealth of knowledge contained in this book. I had doctors telling me it was unlikely I'd be successful. I never gave up hope. Reading real life stories of other woman who had been there, knowing the medical explanation(s) for different reduction procedures, every last bit of information helped me get where I am today.

With my daughter I was only able to nurse until 7 months, but that is because we conceived our son when she was 4 months old. There was a terrible learning curve with my daughter. She was placed in the NICU the first 4 days of her life and I thought, "that's it, it's not going to happen." But re-reading this book kept my hopes alive. It taught me that every woman is different, every woman's experience is different. I found myself going back to the book during those 7 months that she nursed whenever we'd have "issues." We weren't able to exclusively breastfeed, but it doesn't matter. I was able to provide her with the best start for her little life because I was informed. I would have given up the first day had it not been for this book.

A short 13 months after our daughter I gave birth to our son. I once again found myself re-reading the book, looking for little tips that would help with our nursing issues. This time it wasn't a supply issue, actually my supply was amazing at first. But within the first three months of his life it was determined he needed speech therapy to correct tongue issues with lead to nursing issues which in turn lead to supply issues. After weeks of therapy and a little boost from domperidone (noted in the book, it worked wonders for me) we have been exclusively breastfeeding for nearly 11 months now. I still hold firm to the belief that I WOULD NOT HAVE made it this far had it not been for the material in this book. If you read the book and LISTEN to what is being said you'll find comfort in knowing you had the knowledge to do what you dreamed of. Breastfeeding after a readuction is possible. I'm very saddened that I HAD to turn to a book to get the knowledge that for some reason an OB's office was unwilling to share, but grateful that the book exists.

Good book for lactation consultants and families regarding breastfeeding after any breast surgery. I also highly recommend this book for plastic surgeons, obstetricians, and midwives. My favorite part is that in between the main chapters are personal stories of women's experiences of breastfeeding after reduction. I wish all breastfeeding and general parenting books were like this!

Bible-based Economics

Although good, biblically-derived economic thinking didn't originate with John Calvin (the under-appreciated Spanish Scholastics deserve an honored place in the pantheon of free-market heroes, though sadly they had little effect on the dominant economic understandings and attitudes of the Catholic Church of their own day), his influence spread such good thinking more widely and rapidly than had ever previously occurred. It can be argued that the religious "competition" he set in motion also provided intellectual competition for the dominant economic and political structures that served to improve the lives of those who did not ultimately embrace his theology. Calvin's incredibly detailed, systematic understanding of scripture, unencumbered by a millennium of church tradition that often gave as much weight to Aristotle as to Moses, the prophets, or even Paul, allowed Christendom to escape the economically stultifying false understandings of lending at interest and "good order" that impeded both financial and human capital. Hall and Burton provide a masterful and complete overview of Calvin's biblical thought as economic thought and how it both energized the West economically and socially and can serve as a corrective to some of our day's pernicious errors.

Calvin's worldview for the market

This is a very thorough but readable synopsis of Calvin's thought as it relates to the world of money and markets. It is organized so that it connects theological concepts with practical realities and Biblical morality, and includes not just commerce but philanthropy and service as well. The book also includes many references for further reading. So, if you wondered how the Bible applies to work, commerce, poverty and wealth, Calvin did too and this book summarizes some of his thoughts. It's hard to imagine a book that can be thorough and deep, yet readable and succinct. But, this book did it. Bravo to the Calvin 500 team.

OUTSTANDING WORK, FROM A BRILLIANT MIND

Off course, what else can anyone expect from the mind of Dr. Ricardo??? I just wish he had already published this book when I was still in my Undergraduate years as a Physics Major. Or perhaps even better: When I used to sit in his classroom. I owe my mathematical skills to the same teaching techniques I see when I read his book: The ability of Dr. Ricardo to explain complex subjects in a simple way, so different from many other instructors, especially at the undergraduate level. That is, not only the ability to get students to see the practical application of mathematical concepts, but to motivate them to do interesting work. I took my differential equations with another teacher, using the De Prima textbook, (a classic) long before Dr. Ricardo published his work. Nevertheless, I just purchased his book, it is part of my library and will remain there as a source of teaching ideas. Reading his work was like if I was still seating at his calculus class.

Your mileage may vary, for the wrong reasons!

This is primarily a response to the startling denunciation in one of the other reviews.

In the last analysis, it isn't hard to learn the particular tricks you need to solve everybody's favorite exam questions--Tennenbaum or the Schaum Series books (Lipschutz? Spiegel?) will help you do that. Many students should go that route, particularly those who have a firm commitment to being able to perform at a minimal level, without being distracted by concepts at all. (This is humor; I do not subscribe to this theory personally. It is sad that I feel obliged to point this out...)

Slope fields are a MAJOR tool to understand what is going on in a differential equation. The fact that software is now easily able to produce slope fields is a FABULOUS advantage to living in these times. Another tool is phase space; I shudder to think what the reviewer would think of that! A semester of classical mechanics should cure people who do not understand the value of phase space.

Unfortunately, most instructors --including myself-- continue to feel obliged to set examinations in which slope fields do not figure largely. A test containing lots of graphics is beyond the scope of what most instructors are willing to do. (I think I've just persuaded myself to try it!) As a result, the typical student is more concerned with the algebraic aspects of the subject (which are admittedly fascinating), rather than the conceptual aspects of the subject. This probably includes the vast number of low-level engineers who do not aspire to use more than 6.7 differential equations in their entire lives, and so do not need to get involved in the concepts too heavily.

At the more advanced level, I suspect that engineers do certainly need to engage in the more subtle and sophisticated aspects of differential equations, dynamical systems and control systems. Unfortunately, they probably do not know what they will encounter as adults while in their sophomore years! Trust me: ODEs are a lot more than algebra.

Ricardo's book is what I intend to adopt. I hope my students will not review the book until the end of the semester!

Excellent book

I took ODE class 15 years ago and never had to use it in practice. Now, due to a nature of work I have to go back and refresh my knowledge. This is excellent book for student or anyone who wants to understand how to solve and apply differential equations in real life.
My old professor used dry, formal approach to just manipulate equations and never really taught real life use cases.
Unlike most of textbooks I've seen, this book is self contained, no question is left unanswered. I mean really no question.
If topic is not covered in the main text, author provides all the necessary information in appendix, you will even find introduction to vector algebra and complex numbers. You will never see vague explanation or do it yourself calculation for any formula derivation that is not trivial.
Excellent work. I wish I had a chance to use this textbook long time ago when I took my ODE class.
