He doesn't hold IT back, he lets IT go.

From the very first page, one sees Janik clearly has a talent for description and holds nothing back in "Godforsaken". In the first of his three-part series, he strings the reader along with detailed imagery, all the while laying a vivid foundation for which the forthcoming books will rest upon. Janik pulls from something dark within, drawing from his own personal experiences and education, dusting his tale with dry humor and sex, keeping the reader engaged (with a guilty smirk) with every page turn. I look forward to this young author’s future work—surely wherever he plans to take me will be a sticky, uncomfortable place, most likely reeking of burnt rubber and a drunken night gone awry. Nevertheless, I’ll follow him.

This book will suck you in!

From the first page I easily entered this Godforsaken world Tarryl has created. Not only did I feel interested in the main character and his story, but in the way he was described I also felt an equal amount of disgust and dislike for his personality. I didn't think I was going to be interested in following his story because of this. As the tale went from normal missing person investigation to twisted I found myself spending the whole afternoon reading the book instead of just taking an hour to start it. The direction the story went was not what I was expecting. I have a feeling the rest of the books will also keep me guessing. I can't wait to find out.

"Godforsaken" is a highly descriptive novel full of graphic imagery that engages you immediately and throws you into the desolate lives of the characters. A picture of disturbing truth is painted that makes you feel the hopelessness, lechery, and cynical disorder of the human psyche that we would often rather ignore in Life. It establishes an understanding of how corrupt and sullen a human soul can be... and that's all before being introduced to the sorcery that sets the stage for the forthcoming books... A well written first novel... if you have the backbone to read it. I eagerly await the next one.

Be prepared to be scared! You'll put the story down, but it will stay with you....

This is actually 2 short stories by author Luke Smitherd contained in 1 volume (I actually didn't realize this myself, I thought it was 1 short story called "He Waits"), there's another short story called "Keep your Children Close".

If you've seen the other reviews, you'll realize there's something very special about "He Waits". I have to say, I for one was disappointed with "He Waits", but in the best way possible. Allow me to explain....

"He Waits" is an amazing short story, once you read it, you'll know why. Luke Smitherd manages to plant a real seed of unease with this story (which funnily enough is addressed as a point in the story too, the planting of a seed and letting it grow). The antagonist of the story is one of the most unnerving, scary characters that has been committed to paper (or e-paper if you will). That for me was a problem. The story IS fantastic, but it's just a seed. This is a seed that needs to grow and be explored. I would love to see a follow up in the future, there is potential for this story to grow into something so much more (horrific). So to me, this story achieves the goal of what every author wants "Leave them wanting more". Fantastic story and one that will stick with you long after you have finished it. I really did have a hard job of putting this one down, it was just addictive as hell.

"Keep your Children Close" was a pleasant surprise as well. Without giving anything away, this is a perfect example of setting up a scenario (that may even seem familiar to some) and then turning all your expectations on it's head. The danger in this tale arrives from an unexpected direction and what you think you know, isn't what's really happening. The problem with this tale is that by itself, it could be a standout five star tale. However, because it's included with "He Waits", it just pales in comparison. It's a strong tale and I have to say, I found it a worthy read. Sure I would have liked some things fleshed out a bit, and I think there was opportunity to maybe create a bigger set piece, but it still works as a small self contained tale. It's well written and you can understand the horror that the main character feels and how it affects them from that point on.

All in all, these two short stories are worth reading, but be warned, when it comes to "He Waits", you will be left wanting more and it is a tale that will stick with you. I really do hope Luke Smitherd continues this tale, he's planted a seed and this is a character that needs to grow! (take a hint man!).

Highly Recommended Stories of Fear and Horror

This book contains two stories whose common denominator is fear. In one story, the main character can't deal with it and in the other, the main character must deal with it to save her family.

Keep Your Children Close will resonate with any parent. A family goes on a vacation and has a great time, but when it comes time for them to leave, they find they can't because their car battery is dead. Then Shelley (the mother) finds out the real reason they can't leave and struggles to find a way to keep her family safe. As a parent, you can easily put yourself in her shoes and feel her fear and determination.

In He Waits, a young man is scared of everything and we find out he has a very good reason to be scared. This is truly a horror story and will probably leave you with your hands shaking. Caution: Do not read before you go to sleep--because you won't. Read in broad daylight, on a sunny day.

These stories are both written very well and the tension and fear is kept up throughout each story, which is not an easy thing to do. In He Waits, fear seems to be the main characters and the characters are its victims. In Keep Your Children Close, fear is used in an entirely different way. The two stories tell you about the choices fear gives you: Will you cower to it or will you overcome it?

These stories will stick with you after you read them.

I've left many reviews for Smitherd's work so far, and the one thing I say pretty much every time is how original his writing is. One thing I don't touch on often enough is how good he is at making you identify with his characters. The second story in this two-story collection: "Keep Your Children Close," is a great example of this. Anyone who has ever been in a long-term relationship, with it's ups and downs, I think can definitely identify with the leads in this story. Plus, it's just a really cool story that starts down what you think is a familiar path, then veers off wildly into something much cooler.

But let me go back to the title story: "He Waits." Jesus, I have been reading horror since middle school (25+ yrs); and few stories, especially now that I'm an adult, have the ability to give me the willies (very dignified reviewer word there). He Waits is disturbing, truly.

All in all, another can't miss from Smitherd. If you're reading this review as someone who's never read his work before, get on with it and buy this. That way you can tell your friends in the future, after Smitherd gets famous, that you read his work when he was just starting to really make waves.

I got interested as to what Prince2 Method is. I've heard this from a friend, who is a project manager and mentioned that it is a very useful tool for her as a project manager. I am planning to become a skilled and one of the bests project managers. And to help me with my aspirations, I did my own research about the prince2 project management. Luckily, I found this book and I learned a lot of valuable information. I have learned the seven principles, seven themes, and seven processes that comprises the prince 2 project management. This book is fully loaded with information that helps you understand its importance and how it develops you towards the path of career growth. I have also learned the do's and dont's when preparing for the exam. Thumbs up to the author!

It is overwhelming when you are chosen to be the project manager, meaning you have to take charge of the project and make sure that everything is under control. Yet, this kind of task is scary especially if it is your first time to do it. The work is left and right, the pressure is on. But you don't have to worry for everything can be learned and having this book would be a big help for your career. The techniques in handling this kind of task is written very well, easy to understand and to follow. Great book for the beginners.

The Proceedings of the Conference presents high quality, peer reviewed articles from the field of Electronics, Computer Science and Technology. The book is a compilation of research papers from the cutting-edge technologies and it is targeted towards the scientific community actively involved in research activities.

About the Author

Dr. V. Sridhar obtained his B.E. from University of Mysore in Electronics and Communication Engineering, M.E. (Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering) from Jadavpur�University, Calcutta and Ph.D from Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi. He carried out his Post Doctoral Research at Dept. of Electrical and Electronics, University Tenaga Nasional, Malaysia. Dr. Sridhar has been working as a Principal of PES College of Engineering for last 4 years and has been associated with this Institute since 1980, from beginning of his career. His fields of interest include VLSI Design, Digital Signal Processing, Bio-medical Engineering & Instrumentation and Cognitive studies, Computer and Mobile communications. He was also the Registrar (Evaluation) at Visweswaraya Technological University, Belgaum. He has presented and published many papers in National and International peer-reviewed journals and conferences. He has also been a guiding force for M.Sc and Ph.D students. He is instrumental in establishing a CAD Center for VLSI Design as Center of Excellence at the Institution. He is a life member of IEEE (M), IETE (F), ISTE (M), and BMSI (M) and has participated in various national and international conferences.

Dr. H.S. Sheshadri completed his B.E. in Electronics and Communication Engineering from University of Mysore, M.E. in Applied Electronics from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore and Ph.D from Anna University, Chennai. Dr. Sheshadri is currently working as a Professor with Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering in PES College of Engineering, Mandya and has been serving this institution since 1982. His areas of interest are Medical Image Processing and Embedded Systems. He has published many papers in National and International Journals and Conference Proceedings. He is also guiding research candidates for Ph.D programme. He has conducted several short term courses and conferences. He is a life member of IEI, IETE, ISTE, SSI.

Dr. M.C. Padma obtained her B.E. from University of Mysore in Computer Science and Engineering, M.Sc Tech by Research from University of Mysore and Ph.D from VTU, Belgaum. She has been associated with PES College of Engineering since 1990 and is presently working as Professor and Head of Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Her areas of interest are Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, Natural Language Processing, Machine Translation, Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems and Document Image Analysis and Recognition. She has published many papers in National and International journals. She is also guiding research candidates for Ph.D programme. She is a life member of ISTE, AKECTA, IVPR, and CSI.

What our immigration policy has done to one family

I saw Diane on a panel on Face the Nation and bought the book. I also got the audible version so I listened to the author read most of the book. I did not know until nearly the end that she was on Orange is the new Black and Jane the Virgin.

When she was 14 years old, living in Boston, both parents were deported to Columbia. Diane was born in the US so she was a citizen. Friends took her in. She was able to attend a good high school. She is beautiful and talented and so she made it as an actress. Her family problems did not start that day, however. Her parents were extremely anxious all of the time. Her older brother was also deported.

I recommend reading this book to better understand what our undocumented population live with. If the US had better control over visas, some of these situations would be avoided. But how to respond to the millions already here, people who have lived lawfully for a decade, that is the question. We also need to realize that these people are a part of the economy. There is a reason why the Congress, responsible for establishing a naturalization process in the Constitution, have failed to do their job. That reason needs to be brought to light and made known to the public. The consequences of continuing the current situation. Also needs a full debate.

An eye-opening and very relevant read

In a country that is facing mass deportations, this book is very relevant. All of us are familiar with the term "deportation," but few us realize the ramifications, not only to the deportees, but their families. This is a story of true courage, the saga of a fourteen year old child who deals first hand with the devastating effects of deportation. This should be a must read for everyone, especially the incoming members of our federal government who will be shaping future immigration policy. This story is real, riveting, and not sappy. Ms. Guerrero has succeeded in giving us a snapshot into a reality in this country that many don't realize or choose to ignore. An eye-opening read, to say the least.

Her story needs to be heard!

This was an inspiring read! It is very eye opening. Her childhood story needs to be told. Many children have gone through this in our country, yet they are too afraid to speak up! I was fortunate enough to hear Diane speak at the University of California, Riverside. She spoke about her book and the issues she and her parents faced. She also spoke briefly about her career. I had my book signed by her. Needless, to say I couldn't wait to read it. I was not disappointed! It was a worthy read! Diane bravely tells her story and gives children going through what she did in our country a voice! While many people may know her from Orange is the New Black or Jane the Virgin, there is much more to Diane than that! She is couragesly using her platform to send an important message. Everyone needs to read this!
